Thinking of Aitekaaf this year! Adaab?

I am thinking of sitting the Aitekaaf. Could someone enlighten me on the various adaab of aitekaaf one should be observing during the 10 days?

Re: Thinking of Aitekaaf this year! Adaab?

Peace Sidi

I would love to go myself ... but it would present a big burden for my wife to send food for me for 10 days!

In fact that should be your arrangement have someone give you food a little a portion for you and another to share on iftar.
Take clothes and your own towels (3 towels recommended)
Use of itar after iftar - I notice a lot of itteqaf people look sleepy and are often smelly, there is no need for that - of course avoid scent during fasting time
Do you daily awrad on time - much more slowly and with much more attention
Try to pray in front line of jammat
Talk less - read Qur'an more ... If you can try to finish 1 Qur'an in the 10 days
Much du'a in private
Have long ijmai du'a with your iftar buddies
If you are going to talk - do so about sharing knowledge of deen and stories to encourage love of Allah (SWT) and RasoolAllah (SAW)
Sleep after Dhuhr (so you can wake longer after Fajr)
Read doha - Prayer after sunrise ... 2 nafil
If you can do it ... get a cheap mobile phone with no special features and leave your good one at home - you only need to be contactable
Take a pen and paper and - go through some personal Islamic study in your spare time ... For example - Study At-Tahawiyya - pondering over each item and writing about it.
Memorise one new Surah or revise existing ones
Set alarms for all the nafil prayers in the day - the azans will help manage your mandatory ones - in fact try to do the azaan at least once when you are there also.

Re: Thinking of Aitekaaf this year! Adaab?

as always- Jazakallah Sidi.

Some precious advice there. Will reread with more attention when i get home.

my wife will be going to Morocco to see the Shaykh so hopefully I wont have to worry about her being home alone.

Food wise I think I will be ok. If I stay at our Tariqa place then they have iftar there everyday. I will squirrel away niblings from there. With permission of course :)

Havent decided about how many clothes I will need...

As someone sitting the aitekaaf, am i allowed to leave the premises e.g to get some food? etc

Re: Thinking of Aitekaaf this year! Adaab?

You can also get a friend to pick up some food - or do an order for food in the worst case ... If someone comes to mosque for Asr prayer that you know give them some cash to buy some fruit or snack for you - If I was close to you - I would get some food to you myself ... :)

Re: Thinking of Aitekaaf this year! Adaab?

Jazakallah for the offer :)

I will have to sort out the logistics of the food..especially for Sehr.
Am I allowed to cook...say an omlette for breakfast for me and anyone else to share? In the case that I cant get anyone to drop some food off?

Its mostly sehr that I am concerned about...I think will be ok for Iftar/ evening meal.

What kind of literature should i be taking with me? ( i currently have none! )

Re: Thinking of Aitekaaf this year! Adaab?

This may help
VIRTUES OF ITIKAAF (worship in the form of confining oneself to the boundaries of the Masjid)

I do not think that you may in normal circumstances can go out from masjid.Just ask from a local authentic scholar about these masail.

PS: and Please pray for me, inshallah i also plan to be in ALLAH ka Rasta during ramadan.

Re: Thinking of Aitekaaf this year! Adaab?

Jazakallah for the link.
Please remember me in your dua also. Inshallah I hope you have a good aitekaaf too

Re: Thinking of Aitekaaf this year! Adaab?

For sahur - all of the people are in the same boat ... Of course you can cook provided you have access to a masjid kitchen. Don't worry too much though - the agents of Allah (SWT) will take care of His slaves ... :)

Re: Thinking of Aitekaaf this year! Adaab?

Shukran Sidi. Your kind words are motivating! :)

Re: Thinking of Aitekaaf this year! Adaab?

I don't know why I was under the impression that you could do it in your own house, in a sep room.

Do you have to stay in the Masjid if you plan on doing this?

Re: Thinking of Aitekaaf this year! Adaab?

When my husband did Aitekaaf at the masjid, usually the Sahoor would be provided, since there were other men doing Aitekaaf there as well. Same for Iftaar and dinner. I would also bring dinner over to the masjid for him either at Iftaar time or right before Taraweeh.

SC - I pray Allah SWT accepts your Aitekaaf. It is a great blessing to participate in this.

Re: Thinking of Aitekaaf this year! Adaab?

I hope so too..but if not I am more than happy to cook for myself and others there but we will see.

Jazakallah for your Dua's. I hope Allah Swt accepts them :)
May you have blessed Ramadan too Lala

Re: Thinking of Aitekaaf this year! Adaab?

This is some of the stuff that my husband brought with him:

  • sleeping bag
  • extra blanket
  • pillow
  • change of thobes
  • night wear (tshirt, track pants)
  • his own Qur'an
  • snacks
  • water bottle
  • his glasses

Re: Thinking of Aitekaaf this year! Adaab?

So the plan has hit a snag. She who must be obeyed has declared that I cannot go as she will be "alone". Obviously, I cant then go.

:(

Re: Thinking of Aitekaaf this year! Adaab?

^ There is always option of Nafli Aitakaaf, just spend as much time as possible in the masjid. Better then doing nothing.

Re: Thinking of Aitekaaf this year! Adaab?

Agreed. That will probably be the way forward!

Re: Thinking of Aitekaaf this year! Adaab?

Nahein ... that is called *chirya 'itiqaaf *... 'itiqaaf is already nafali ... :D

Re: Thinking of Aitekaaf this year! Adaab?

^ I believe proper 10 day itikaf is sunnat ibadat and not nafli. :)

Re: Thinking of Aitekaaf this year! Adaab?

Peace All,

I think i’m confuse due to mixing Tahajud and Itikaf though I heard/seen itikaaf could be one, three, and forty days. Plz explain with reference. :jazak:

Re: Thinking of Aitekaaf this year! Adaab?

Peace bao bihari

What I meant was that on the individual Ramadan i’tiqaf of 10 days is nafil, but yes on the community (al kifaya) I believe it is Sunnah Mu’akkadah.

But the i’tiqaf has rules … There are different kinds of it as brother Lethal Kamikaze said, but each kind has the same basic rules … Like the fasting …in Ramadan it is fard, but outside generally speaking it is nafil. If we eat at lunch time during a fast the fast is invalid … Likewise leaving the masjid will break or invalidate the i’tiqaf ..

But now I see what you are saying … As long as your niya is for short stay then you can enter the Halat of i’tiqaf and then break it whenever you wish … :k:

Just like when people eat in masjid by making niya of i’tiqaf to make it permissible to eat there and then they break the i’tiqaf by doing something to invalidate it … Like walking home …

So in ths respect it is possible to do 10 separate nafil i’teqafs …

This is a good site …
