Excellent article, really shows that mind over matter is true. The link only has the intro to the article, but basically the rest of the article shows how the monks gamma waves are generally higher than that of avg ppl, and they go even higher as they started their meditation.

Now if you do justice to your namaz, that is meditation also, 5 times a day, and while we have just talked about the religious, or spiritual or emotional aspects of it, a case can be made that it has physical asepcts as well on your wellbeing.

what do you think?

sorry I cant paste the whole article, I read it in the print version this morning.

May I know what "Ume-Zafeerah" means. Sounds beautiful.. must mean beautiful :)

Re: thinking can change the brain

i was able to concentrate much better when i used to pray/meditate regularly. meditation or prayer (if done in the right way) helps clear up the mind, relieve of stress etc. and so u should be better able to concentrate on any new information.

Re: thinking can change the brain

That's true..it has nothing to do with religion. Minds feels like a clean sponge.

Re: thinking can change the brain

pathaniyay,

I agree,

see, religion says that when you pray, its not because god needs it...its because you need it. so if we forget about specific religions for a minute, but the fact that each religion focuses on prayer/meditation shows that there is wisdom there that we defintey did not understand as masses centuries or even decades ago, and there is probably more that we will learn as we move forward.

Re: thinking can change the brain

I fully agree with you. I started meditation about three years back and have benefitted immensely.

Re: thinking can change the brain

id be wary to believe stuff like this. new age spirituality especially the commercial kind has been selling ideas about brain waves and frequencies for a very long time. “silva method” i remember seeks to enhance your alpha waves or something. not sure if gamma waves are particularly special compared to alpha waves but basically you learn to manipulate your brain. isnt necessarily a good thing or a particularly spectacular accomplishment, after all if your constantly angry or constantly sad that is likely to bring about changes in your brain activity too. or for that matter if you bash your head against a wall. the question is whether there is any benefit to having high alpha/gamma/beta/falana waves.

this is a pretty good resource:

Re: thinking can change the brain

in life we're sometimes too busy to live the moment
meditation helps put things in perspective
it helps starting to live in the moment instead of rushing to the future
a peacefull brain is more sane, and so more prone to good abilities than a weaker brain
i don't know if those wave thingy are really important, but it's sure that a well cared brain (healthy lifestyle, and no stress) is more performant

Re: thinking can change the brain

ravage if you read the whole article it would go into how certain activities actually change the physical characteristics of your brain which then has its own physical implications. This is nothing new, research has already shown that as you grow older if you challenge your brain you will stay sharp, maintaon your memory and fight against age related brain issues.
