Re: Things that India Pakistan kept on exchanging after partition

^ Interesting. Possible.

Re: Things that India Pakistan kept on exchanging after partition

Mirasi? You mean India kept on importing Mirasis in the name of Nusrat fateh Ali Khan, Rahat fateh Ali Khan, Atif Aslam, etc

Re: Things that India Pakistan kept on exchanging after partition

Amazing.

Re: Things that India Pakistan kept on exchanging after partition

I think he probably means Veena and co.

Re: Things that India Pakistan kept on exchanging after partition

I think mirasi comes from merasi (those who promote culture), looked down upon nowadays. Maybe at some stage they might have been very respectable.

Re: Things that India Pakistan kept on exchanging after partition

I like that. Treating the ladies of the night with respect. Didn't know this.

Interesting anecdote abt this song. For one Diwana about 12 yrs ago, attended a function in which my colleagues high school daughter danced to this song. Hadn't seen the movie. Hadn't heard the song. Didn't know there was such a movie. She did a very nice job. But the song caught my attention. I just knew it was a special song.

Auto correct changed Diwali to said name above. This one is special. What a nice Freudian slip. Priceless.

Re: Things that India Pakistan kept on exchanging after partition

I like Sanjay Leela Bhansali's work, because he worked on background of characters, their cultural and religious traditions. Even there was something to learn when he presented Muslim characters in "Sanwariya'.

Anything from Pakistan that was popular in India during your childhood?

Re: Things that India Pakistan kept on exchanging after partition

Sanwariya I believe was Randhir Kapoor and a muslim girl. There was a prostitute house also in the movie coincidentally. Some famous actress was the head of the prostitute house. I was lost wrt that movie.

Re what was popular from Pakistan during childhood. I had zero knowledge of Pakistan music and film industry. No internet. TV had only 2 or 3 stations. So nothing from Pakistan.

Of course we loved the Pakistani cricketers and hockey players. In hockey if india didn't win we rooted for Pakistan.

Even when pakistani cricketers toured india we were fans. When As if Iqbal was run out unfortunately in his last test match inning in Delhi I think - Bedi bowling? our hostel common room went pindrop silent. Probably some silent tears. Then we all stood and clapped for this gentleman.

Re: Things that India Pakistan kept on exchanging after partition

Another thing that people still haven't mentioned is books and writers. Gulzar's and Qateel Shifai's poetry worked as bridge between two countries.

Re: Things that India Pakistan kept on exchanging after partition

That's awesome to hear about your classmate's daughter. I learnt classical Indian dance both a bit of Bharatanatyam and Kathak and we performed a couple of Devdas's songs like dola re dola and kaahe chhed mohe.
. Madhuri Dixit is absolutely graceful and beautiful in the original as is Aishwaraya.

Re: Things that India Pakistan kept on exchanging after partition

I think Pakistani dramas and comedies as well as stage plays were very popular. People used to queue outside video shops for video casettes of Dhoop Kinare, Tanhayein, Ankahi.

Now trend has continued. Kirron Kher who is now a MP of conservative party also mentioned how she liked watching Pakistani dramas. She is doing voice over and promotion for some of the Pakistani shows on Zee ZIndagi.

Re: Things that India Pakistan kept on exchanging after partition

..figured out meaning. Never mind.
