"They're such a bad parent..."

Who decides? Who gets to say someone is a bad parent? The last time I checked there was no right or wrong answer to this.Aside from the glaringly obvious…what makes an average person a bad parent and since when are equally guilty people allowed to point?

Re: "They're such a bad parent..."

they're not. but i've noticed some people tend to think being a parent qualifies them to criticize other parents and that's such bs. like you said, there is no right or wrong way to raise a child- you do what you think is best and everyone else can take a hike.

Re: "They're such a bad parent..."

In my dictionary the bad parent is one who leaves and abandon his/her child

Re: "They're such a bad parent..."

Well it's all subjective. I'm pretty judgemental to be honest.

Some things really get my goat, like irresponsible diets - giving young kids candies and soft drinks.

Re: "They're such a bad parent..."

those who dont care of their baby i know one lady in my family she even dont care for her cleanliness her baby is always dirty she never gives her bath regulary never trim her nails n whenever she cries she gives her slice of cheeze or pepsi in feeding cup n she is only 8 months old baby :( i feel pity 4 her every1 in family points her but she is like my mum in law is v strict she dont help me i have 2 do household work blah blah i cant manage everything but i consider these lame excuses

Re: "They're such a bad parent..."

Like stoppit I am pretty judgemental too. I may not say it on someone's face but few things a kid does or doesn't do which the parents can change qualifies as the parent being a bad parent or atleast close to it.

My sister (I wouldn't say she is a bad parent but maybe that's one the trait of a bad parent), gives her son no home cooked food. Its always pizza, nuggets, fries etc. So to me that's just not right. I have a friend she doesn't care much about her son's cleanliness. They are both very good parents in general but that just one thing maybe like I said is a little trait.. idk but it does bother me :(

Re: "They're such a bad parent..."

I used to be judgmental until I had to raise kids of my own. :/

:phati:

Re: "They're such a bad parent..."

I'll be honest, I've judged. No, I don't have kids of my own. But when you come to know someone pretty well......you've interacted with them enough times....and you see a consistency in the child's and parent's behavior......your judgement can have greater substance. There is such a thing as ineffective and dysfunctional parenting.

Re: "They're such a bad parent..."

I think it's safe to say that if someone's parenting style is different than yours, you automatically judge and make them the bad parent :(/ .

Only time will reveal products of good and bad parenting...

Re: "They're such a bad parent..."

I have to admit I am both. I have my on days and my off days. I have known to give my children pizza two days in row and plunk them in front of a movie if I have something urgent to do for work. But I have done homemade baked goods and taught them Quran too. I hope to break even.

Re: "They're such a bad parent..."

I agree with both of you.

I used to be judgmental about this - quite a bit until recently.

What I see is every parent tries their best in every aspect of parenting. But its impossible to ace it all...especially if you have more than one.

What may be important for one person may not be important for another. A home cooked meal might be important to one parent but another might feel that cooking time is better spent having one on one time with their child doing homework or something else. I just notice that some people are so quick to label another as a bad parent but who knows the inside story? No one.

One example is a woman I saw in the parking lot of a grocery store. She had her child in the shopping cart seat. It was raining, cold and she herself was wearing a jacket. Her kid was wearing a onesie with shoes. She was unloading her car, in no rush to get her kid out of the cold. That is obviously bad.

Then you have some people who have 4 kids...full days of activities, school, kumon, homework and husband travels for work 4 days a week. She definitely takes some short cuts when it comes to their dinners sometimes. I don't think I can blame her. I know I'd do it. But her kids are more well behaved than many of the organically fed brats I see coming and going on a daily basis.

I don't know...as time goes on its become harder and harder to call someone a bad parent.

Re: "They're such a bad parent..."

I dunno man, some things are pretty obvious...
driving with the kid in your lap?
hitting, verbally abusing them?
letting them run around wild, destroying other ppls property and thinking it's "cute"?

Re: "They're such a bad parent..."

^ yeah but i think reha meant apart from the obvious such as the things you've listed above.

Re: "They're such a bad parent..."

yeah but ppl who do that would still think they're "good" parents and "shouldn't be judged"

Re: "They're such a bad parent..."

I have to say, last night was pretty bad.

Re: "They're such a bad parent..."

Ensuring your kids eat well and are also well behaved aren't mutually exclusive.

It's not fair or normal to expect amazing parenting all the time. Like njgal said, there are going to be days where you have to compromise or go for convenience - that's not bad parenting imo... it's the consistency like rv mentioned.

Back to the eating point for a moment, if the parents are conscious about their diet and health, then it's highly unlikely the kids will be eating junk. It doesn't take extra effort when you are used to a certain routine. I hate brattish kids but in my observation, most grow out of it. But a child being given coke with every meal continues with bad eating habits. Like I said before, it's a highly subjective topic. Different things are important to different people.

Re: "They're such a bad parent..."

^ coke is the WORST for kids. its literally like drugs for them. i've seen kids on such sugar highs, they tear apart the whole place, exhaust themselves in the process and have a crazy hangover afterwards. ugh.
