I just watched Scarface again recently for the first time in years, and I have to say, I’d forgotten how absolutely awesome this movie was.
It’s not that there aren’t good films out there but today’s ‘stars’ like Brad Pitt or Tom Cruise just don’t stand comparison alongside greats like Pacino and De Niro.
Why do you think those guys are still in demand? Look at the latest James Bond, that wax dummy look-a-like Timothy Dalton. All the charisma of a wet sponge.
i remember my parents listening to old desi songs and i couldnt figure out for the life of me what they actually liked in them.. !! needless to say i was least impressed by the tunes.. but then now when i listen to the songs of my times ( i am quarter of a century old .. well almost..
) i think they are better than what they make now.. so i guess its an on going process where when u get older you stick with what u like but the industry does not.. new trends emerge and u just cant keep up with them cause admit it u r not 16 anymore..
and so this gap comes into existence where u hear ppl saying nice stuff about what they thought were good movies or music and the music of TODAY !! .. and the same TODAY becomes thing of a past for the next generation..
Programming today is a race between software engineers striving
to build bigger and better idiot-proof programs, and the Universe
trying to produce bigger and better idiots. So far, the Universe
is winning

Yankee, I hear what you are saying but that’s not the case as far as what I am talking about. Goodfellas and Gladiator are good examples of quality recent films, but they are few and far between.
Mariah, the difference between Pacino and Keanu Reeves is more than ‘babe’ factor isn’t it? Pacino has charisma, whereas Reeves best role was probably in Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure
Tarantino is one of the few Directors who are reproducing that same raw stuff we used to have in the 70s. Maybe it’s just about knowing how to cast a movie?
Another classic was “One flew over the cuckoos nest”, Jack Nicholson, wow, he was excellent..that nurse Ratchett gave me nightmares for months!!!
I think Tarantino uses too much gore in his films, e.g Reservoir dogs, Pulp fiction, yeah they were good films, but nothing on the class we had in the 70`s.
Agree 101% with Extreme but u know u sound like my dad !!!! Seriously, he thinks that Indian films aren't what they used to be in his days .... and he's probably right. I think its all part of growing up. We grow up and look back at the good old days when they used to make 'proper' movies. People who are 40+ regard Scarface as 'trashy' - we find it 'inspiring'. In future, we'll label the movies that our kids watch 'rotten' whereas our kids will think that they are 'masterpieces'.
I also think that nowadays directors expect different qualities from their stars. I quite honestly believe that Pacino wouldn't have made it as a big star had entered the film industry in the nineties - he's simply too short. Whereas in the past actors were hired on their acting abilities, today stars are hired solely on their sex appeal. How many ugly actors do u know ????? I mean look at Guy Ritchies recent flick: Snatch. The cast included Brad Pitt who had to pretend to be this Irish roughie. Anyway, I think Brad wrecked the whole film cuz he just wasn't suited to the role and no doubt Guy had only hired him to get the attention of the female audience.
Sobi.
P.S. Yeh I admit that Pacino is well cute but he's also tiny. U know in Scarface, where he gets married to Michelle Pfierre (spelt totally wrong i know) the director had to get Pacino to stand on a box so the wedding kiss wouldn’t look so silly. Totally irrelevant, but I thought that I’d let you know just in case the question pops up in a pub quiz one day !!!! Thank me not !!!
P.S.S. What is it with this obsession that Anglo-Pakistani boys have with Scarface and the Godfather trilogy. Yeh they were good but they weren't the best films ever.
See go back to the 70s and you had Paul Newman and Robert Redford, so it’s not like there was a shortage of pin ups either. Maybe just more thought had to go into them cos they couldn’t rely on special effects like in that ****e film, Independence Day.
