Laughter might be the best medicine but it can kill you too! Fatal Hilarity is the official term used to describe death as a result of laughter and it is brought about by either asphyxiation (inability to breathe correctly), heart failure (due to the constant straining on the heart and dangerously high levels of heart rate), as well as other lung &heart conditions such as asthma, bronchitis, CHD, ARDS, cardiac arrhythmia etc.
Here are some of the famous cases of fatal hilarity that have been documented:
**
3rd century BC:** The Greek philosopher Chrysippus died of laughter after giving his donkey wine and then seeing the donkey trying to eat figs.
**1410: **Martin I of Aragon died from a lethal combination of indigestion and uncontrollable laughing
1599: The Burmese king Nanda Bayin, laughed to death when informed, by a visiting Italian merchant, that Venice was a free state without a king.
**
1660:** the Scottish aristocrat, Thomas Urquhart, is said to have died laughing upon hearing that Charles II had taken the throne.
**
1975: **Alex Mitchell, a 50-year-old bricklayer from England, literally died laughing while watching an episode of The Goodies. According to his wife, who was a witness, Mitchell was unable to stop laughing whilst watching a sketch in the episode “Kung Fu Kapers”. After twenty-five minutes of continuous laughter Mitchell finally slumped on the sofa and expired from heart failure. His widow later sent the Goodies a letter thanking them for making Mitchell’s final moments so pleasant.
1989: A Danish audiologist, Ole Bentzen, died watching A Fish Called Wanda. His heart was estimated to have beat at between 250 and 500 beats per minute, before he succumbed to cardiac arrest.
**
2003:** Damnoen Saen-um, a Thai ice cream salesman, is reported to have died while laughing in his sleep at the age of 52. His wife was unable to wake him, and he stopped breathing after two minutes of continuous laughter. It is believed that he died either of heart failure or asphyxiation.
Thats Why In Islam ..Laughing in such a manner is prohibited and disliked.... eg. Your wudu also breaks from laughing .. hence when required / in the spur of the moment ...the prophet SAW used to smile and only to the extent that his teeth would show and did not laugh with mouth wide open and makinh such high laughing noise in state of laughter ...
See there IS hikmat in everything which Islam teaches.
Heart failure can occur suddenly and unexpectedly even from severe cases of shock, be it a shock impact or neural shock, i think your reffering to cancer or heart disease which takes years.
Asphyxiation is again something that can occur suddenly and a case of the extreme giggles can and does result in premature death.
I’m no medical proffesional but i know those are common facts… and i’m fully confident a medical expert will back up that view.
Icono is a doctor. He is right. Heart failure takes many years to kill but heart attack can cause sudden death. My father died of heart failure that is why I know.
Yeah I know desi say uss ka heart fail ho ga-ya when they mean to say uss ko heart attack ho ga-ya.
So is Fatal Hilarity a myth? Are all the cases listed above either not legit or very rare? Laughter definitely wouldn’t kill a normal, healthy person, but what about those with lung & heart conditions?
^ seriously ur in the shaitaani mode 24/7, even during Ramadan
K, this is the explaination behind Fatal Hilarity:
I’m not saying this is definitely true, hence my questions in post 12. In fact, yogis believe continuous laughter is actually good and there’s many laughter exercises for the face and the stomach. So esplain doctor saahebaan… %between%
The diaphragm weakening explanation is not true. Firstly because unless the nerves to diaphragm on both sides it doesnt get weak in minutes and secondly even if diaphragm is weak, chest muscles can maintain breathing albeit at low efficiency hence sudden death wont happen.
The second explanation of heart beating too fast is possible its called V Tach or V Fib, this can lead to sudden death but again, can laughter cause this? I doubt it can really be proved.
