There is something wrong with my laptop

Hi people,

I need your help!

There is something seriously wrong with my laptop. In the past 12 hours, it’s just shut down on me, twice, with no explanation at all. I mean, it goes completely dead all of a sudden. I can be reading the news online, chatting with someone, or doing absolutely nothing. It just goes dead.

Could this be some sort of Trojan virus? Cause I plugged my memory stick into my husband’s laptop and a trojan virus warning came up. I was really surprised as I have used it on my laptop before and no warning has ever shown up. I ran my norton anti-virus, and everything seems ok.

Not sure what the problem is, but there certainly is a problem. I can’t exactly take this back to the FutureShop as I’m not in Canada. This laptop is my lifeline … it cannot die. :frowning:

Any clue on what is wrong with this?

Re: There is something wrong with my laptop

Its got a chipkali in it :cb:

Re: There is something wrong with my laptop

It maybe overheating…try getting yourself a Chill Pad as it’s called. It’s like a fan base that you put under ur laptop to give it that extra cooling. Here’s an example of what it looks like CHILL PAD

You can also run an online virus scan HERE

Hope it helps you.

Re: There is something wrong with my laptop

I doubt it is a virus, but you may want to scan the memory stick with your husband's computer's antivirus (congratulations on your marriage, by the way. I didn't knew till just now!). Insert the memory stick and then direct the anti-virus software to make a specific scan of the stick. If a virus is detected, then you may need to do a full external scan of your computer to rid it of virus and trojans.

However, I suspect this is a hardware malfunction. Does the computer die completely or just the LCD screen shuts off leaving buttons working. If that is the case, there may be a lose connection between the keyboard/CPU and the LCD screen.

Another culprit could be a lose connection in the battery compartment. Take out the battery and insert it again, making sure it clicks properly and is not loose.

The power on/off button could also malfunction. Check to see if there is too much wear-and-tear and if the button is pressed accidently.

Re: There is something wrong with my laptop

^ Faisal there is a reason you became a CPA.

Mehnzaz, Congratulations.

Oh about the laptop, just buy a new one.

Re: There is something wrong with my laptop

It's the whole computer that just dies, not only the monitor. Ok, I will do the scan like you suggest.....

and thank you and Kaleem for the congrats. :D

Re: There is something wrong with my laptop

End of Life for this poor sucker.

The problem seems to be with the power management (battery, how system regulates/circulates the power, AC connector, etc.).

Re: There is something wrong with my laptop

If it immidetly completely shuts off, its:

  • Over heating. You have to goto BIOS to see what is the temprature of the CPU is. If you let us know exact model, maybe there is a windows program that lets you see the temprature of the laptop.
Try using it somewhere where it has clear air flow through its vents

  • RAM : it can go bad, you may have to replace it. I am guessing you are not v.technical. If you can get someone to peek and see how many RAM is in there (you have to open bottom compartment). If you have two, take one out and try using it to see if it still crashes. And then put that in and try with other

  • Mohterboard: you need to bring it to futureshop. Hard to check if it is that, but overtime (ranging from days to weeks) , the problem will happening more nad more.

Re: There is something wrong with my laptop

does it drop dead when its on the powersupply or only on battery?

anyway, install the following program: speedfan: http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php

I think the thermal protection of your cpu is doing the trick of dying on you
Every up-to-date cpu has a protection temperature built in. When the cpu is getting overheated the thermal protection will shut down your computer without a warning.
Just install speedfan and monitor the temperature for a few hours.

I think the cpu cooler isnt working properly or you have too much dust in your laptop air-outtake. Try turning on the vacuumcleaner and clean the air outtake of the laptop with the laptop turned OFF! If this doesnt work you ll have to bring it to any computer store and let them replace the cpu cooler.
If your hubby is good with hardware he can do it himself or you can
Congradulations on shaadi btw MashAllah

Re: There is something wrong with my laptop

End of life? I haven’t even had this computer for 6 months!

ok I keep it plugged in … and yeah, I do leave it running, unattended, for long periods of time. I am starting to shut it off at night time. :bummer:

It’s a Toshiba Satellite P200. Windows Vista, Intel Core Duo CPU T2450.

ok and in recent news, I keep getting this pop up saying someone keeps, repeatedly, trying to attack my computer. It’s coming up like every other minute for the past hour. I just disconnected my internet for a while and when I came back, the warning kept coming. My computer says it blocks it … so I’m ok, right?

Re: There is something wrong with my laptop

which programme is giving that pupop?

and did u try the programme speedfan?

Re: There is something wrong with my laptop

Before you click "ok" to acknowledge that you have read the message and its fine to block that remote computer to access your laptop, see if there is a checkbox to say "do not warn me again" on this thing. As a general rule, no remote computer shoud be allowed to access your computer except in very limited instances (some peer to peer networks require it, remote technical assistance etc).

If some legit and necessary internet service requires remote access to your machine, it will ask you in a better format. Point being, your AV software (or firewall) should not bug you about stopping someone from accessing your computer. It should be smart enough to stop the threat, without popping up the message every now and then.

Re: your main issue, since your laptop is a Toshiba, and this is likely a hardware problem, you can go to their website for local repair center. In Jakarta, here is the number: 62-21-634-7108/09/10.

Re: There is something wrong with my laptop

i have the same problem with my laptop too, it suddenly shuts down; i came to realise after a few times of it happening, that is was a loose connection in the mains adaptor that connects to the back of my laptop. So i simply replaced the adaptor and all is well.
