I was visiting Karachi during summer vacations in '95 - yes THAT deadliest year! was sitting with family at home one night when suddenly heard some faint thumps on the roof. My brother and I looked at each other and I instantly shouted to closer the doors. He ran to the front while I shut the kitchen door closed and then immediately dialed a friend telling him in broken wrods to get some guys here loaded. Somehow I had the feeling that I have only few seconds to avail and thats exactly what happened, I was still on the phone when line went dead. So that was a sure shot sign of what was to follow. We crammed rest of the family in a bedroom and then my brother had the guns pulled out, gave one to me and had one for himself. Our TV lounge was the most vulnerable & the easiest point to enter since it had one outer side wall almost all built with metal grills . We turned the lights off, drew the curtains and stayed there to see what happens next. In the meantime, my friend realizing the gravity of the situation, rushed straight to my house without wasting time to collect some more help. He fired some aerial shots challenging the guys on the rooftop. He had the presence of mind not to put himself out in the open. All that shouting and firing probably played with the nerves of those guys up there and they started jumping into adjacent houses and disappeared. Was an eventful night with the entire neighborhood out on streets on the lookout for the would be robbers. Later when I checked upstairs, they were able to break into the area which leads to stairs, but due to the double door system that we had, it bought us few precious moments for help to arrive.
Consequences: well for one thing, we yanked out that stupid grill thingie and had built a conceret wall with only couple of windows. Second, pulling the right strings with the phone dept. got the phone line burried into the ground coming to house instead of havinvg it dangling on the roof. Third .... until then mom didn't know there were guns in the house .... she was quite upset about it. Bulk of her gussa fell on my brother since I was merely a visitor!
But in the end, it wasn't the guns or guys, only the power of Allah SWT that saved us from any tragic incident.
Wow you were pretty well prepared for that. Some people would have just panicked.
