Re: The World's Three Largest Arms Importers All Border One Another
Am surprised to see China import arms; even they don't have faith in their own products.
Re: The World’s Three Largest Arms Importers All Border One Another
Even russia imported a newer frigate from France, so I guess they don’t trust their own stuff that they sell to china ? ![]()
Re: The World's Three Largest Arms Importers All Border One Another
Or they are loading malware into the stuff they are selling to China, so they can keep an eye on what she is upto.
Re: The World’s Three Largest Arms Importers All Border One Another
China imports from first world and exports to third world. The country is currently the third biggest arms supplier in the world.
Imagine if most countries resolved their disputes without involving USA, Russia or UK. Wouldn’t they be saving tons of money? ![]()
Re: The World's Three Largest Arms Importers All Border One Another
When did Russia become first world? ;)

First world of weapon manufacturing :P
Re: The World's Three Largest Arms Importers All Border One Another
The wink in post 5 is threatening. Got to load up on arms.

That is how they play it. These countries and Israel have war-based economies. They need conflict to thrive. Peace is detrimental to their growth.
Re: The World's Three Largest Arms Importers All Border One Another
Sadly the insecurity amongst states in the region forces these costly arms build-ups. :(
Re: The World's Three Largest Arms Importers All Border One Another
meanwhile asian countries like Japan, Singapore, Korea are spending money on development, cleaner cities and more efficient transport with bullet trains etc and attracting tourists. While the countries above are all still dealing with massive inequality between populations, pollution, corruption, lot of red tape and security issues/safety for their population. The tourist destinations in the subcontinent consisting of architectural and natural wonders are hidden from the world as less people now go there due to safety issues. while the europe gets many visitors every year and has rail system that connects countries thinking of something similar from pakistan, india, bangladesh and nepal is an impossible dream.
Really sad state of affairs since the subcontinent countries have such great diversity in tourist sites..maybe more than the above countries. Instead of competing with such countries we will compete with countries like somalia drowning in insecurity
Re: The World’s Three Largest Arms Importers All Border One Another
Maybe in another lifetime or a different century. ![]()
Re: The World’s Three Largest Arms Importers All Border One Another
Yes maybe a couple of centuries from now..or maybe when aliens attack or if the british raj comes again.
who knows? lets hope sanity returns to the region soon because more is lost and gained with missing opportunities. More people have died in dozen plus famines created in the british raj for economic benefits than in the last 70 years for other reasons. Famines created by diverting food overseas rather than feeding the local populace.
From the 11th to 18th century there were 14 major famines but during british raj there was an estimated major famine every 2 years. Then and Now: British Imperial Policy Means Famine According to Wikipedia an estimated 30-40 million people died. Timeline of major famines in India during British rule - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The British were very smart. Keeping the populations in poverty during their rule and leaving in time to wash their hands of the bloodbath and animosity they had left behind. Had the partition been peaceful there wouldn’t have been so many seeds of distrust and animosity sowed over the past 70 years. Now it’s like nothing can be done and other foreign powers can only benefit from the situation with arms sales.
Yes, there is no way we can compete with the above countries while we can’t rise above this.
Of course few in either country probably knows this history.Don’t even know whether this history of famines is actually even covered..as it covered areas as diverse as bihar, punjab and kashmir. No less than any other holocaust.
Re: The World's Three Largest Arms Importers All Border One Another
Had there been no animosity at time of partition, no bloodshed, no wars and no excess spending on arms relative to other needs of the population India and Pakistan could have both been primary tourist destinations and rival Europe. If that money in the last 70 years had been spent on development, tourism and basic needs of people both countries could have been like Japan, Singapore or China. So many tourists visit Singapore and small countries in Europe yet the scenery of swat valley, northern areas, gilgit and murree are hidden from the world.
In India also due to security reasons tourism is low and many people miss out. Of course the corrupt political leaderships would want this to continue as they can benefit from it. I think the saddest part is that due to excuse of security/visa many people in India and Pakistan can never visit the others countries and actually genuinely learn about the people on the other side or know of the commonalities in history. There are movies and tv shows and now finally Zee will screen pakistani dramas but for a long time this exchange was hidden rather than open. I don't know what most Pakistanis think of Indians apart from some threads here but there seems to be better knowledge than Indians on Pakistan. Probably due to Bollywood although bollywood is not always realistic. I think Indians are a bit more ignorant due to lack of promotion of Pakistani culture like tv shows. When my Indian relatives and family started watching hum tv dramas they were surprised by how similar things were- as in way of living, food, culture and the clothes were all similar to what we have in India. In the media and everywhere else you only ever read about how different people are not similar. This has a big impact. My parents are conservative and probably never thought of all this but now when i ask them what he thinks my papa says "woh hamaere jaise hi hain. bhai/behan the jo bichad gaye. Humein khush hone chaiye unke liye agar wahan acha hota hai aur agar unke dramas zyaada acche hain." He watches an episode of the current drama he is seeing while getting ready before going to work.
Now they tell all friends and relatives to watch pakistani dramas. Even telling Pakistanis they meet here. Humtv comes with other Indian channels abroad but i don't know available it is to those living in India although i know many watch shows on yt. Now with this new channel they will get to know and learn about Pakistanis better.
While it would be really great tourism for trade if all issues are solved it won't because there is a mini hate industry in both countries that thrives on animosity and needs it to keep going..the media being one of them. If one good step happens one negative step pushes the process 10 steps back and the mistrust continues. then again can we really blame media vs our own human nature. If you look at India-Pakistan articles/tv shows the one showing negative content get more comments/TRP than any positive ones. Any positive attempt is mocked from people of either side. So other than hope maybe thought of any change is futile. Maybe it says something about us as people?
The history of India-Pakistan will be remembered by the world as a lesson of what could have been, what potential there was and what was the reality. A lesson to all business graduates that one can be blessed with all the resources and skills but if there is mismanagement, corruption and people serving their own needs rather than looking at overall good at the top level the company will drown.
If one day the powers to be in both countries decide to show there power and if both countries drown in the flames of these arms that they are acquiring, then i wonder how the world will view us? Will they remember us for the natural beauty and architectural wonders of either land? Will they know of the contributions of either country to the world ie. indus valley/taj mahal or remember us as nuisances at the world stage and be happy at our demise. Interesting question.
Ok im done being pessimistic now. :)

Japan and S. Korea benefit from US protection just like Europe. Japan is increasing military spending these days though I don't know what is the status of south korea.

true but at least they have the basics right for their populations. Safety, security for locals and foreigners, food, electricity, shelter.
S. Korea have to contend with N. Korea but they give other areas priority.
