arabs have done a lot of dumb things and wasted a lot of $ on useless things. amazingly but this isnt one of them for the short term. this happens to be one of the best hotels in the world. daily rental of a room is a couple of grand. most of the tourists surprise surprise are westerners. its profitable so not a bad investment.
however, dumb in the long run cos when the arabs run out of oil they wont have the electricity to even power this huge thing. no tourist will ever come out here. arabs should be investing in industry and other productive ventures rather than these expensive toys.

Tell me one country that has made 0 bad investments. The living conditions in this country can certainly beat many western nations. Plus the UAE is not only dependent on oil. For some reason this is a huge misconception that all arab nations are dependent on oil and the moment oil runs out the country is dead !!
Go get a copy of the financial times and check the 2000 trade figures and I bet you will be surprised. I apologise in advance if this post seems like an attack. This place is what I call home.

well some1 just posted earlier ke there isnt enuff electricity to run this bldg after their natural resource [OIL] is over, well Dubai is the city whic is almost over with the OIL n now its economy is boomin on Tourism, ppl u should visit this city, its really amazing, ye but not durin the summer, will suggest to visit during Nov-April, a best place to be!

krusty, kindly post the figures if you have them for 2000. now please dont post the re-export figures which are merely boosted by memons and patels doing their age old dandha. these folks would be first ones to leave when oil $ runs out.
see what cia has to say about uae. similar picture is painted for other arab countries mainly kuwait, saudi etc. all electricity in uae and these arab countries is produced by burning fuel. exports other than oil and gas… still remain constricted to fish and dates. No development whatsoever in that area. proving the point that no industry exists to compliment oil when it runs out. so when they run out of oil and can not produce electricity which memon and patel would do business in dubai?
