ahhh....but my friend.....the praise being offered in this thread is not for the words of Allah but for the workmanship of the craftsmen that created the 800 kg book.

I dont know. It kind of saddened me that a structure was built next to kabaa which does not compliment but actually over whelms the Haram. Plus do you know that 2025 extension plan of Haram does not have the clock tower in the map (at least in the proposal)? That means that they spent billions of dollars, only to have the structure for not even 20 years.

and that clock tower is filled with 5 start hotels and shopping malls. Now that is too much of commercialism going around kabaa. I just kind of felt awkward. Maybe I am wrong here, but I failed to find the spirit of Islam and Hazrat Ibrahim outside Haram, not within 100 feet of it.

BTW, architecturally there is no doubt that structure is beautiful . Here is the pic that I took from outside Haram.

photos like this one really bother me......too much congestion of steel and cement around a place that really should have no competition at all.....

but then again, maybe the irony of it all is what they are trying to achieve.....

Yep granted some comments have inferred that too. My point is that as a gift it is indeed of high value not just material value but spiritual and community value too. Now the way I see it man made architecture can be enhanced by the words of God, and likewise even a mud brick building can be enhanced if it was a mud brick masjid... so even if this Quran was like the Indonesian giant Koran made from old planks of wood it would still have a high value... however for the Russians to embelish it in gold is worthy of merit... if this was a gesture by another Muslim country it would almost be expected but from Russians it is indeed worthy of special merit.

Thats the way I see it. Offcourse if the Koran were 80 grams or 8000 grams it matters not.... were it of paper or hide or gold but whatever it is a Koran and it is a gift and for me thats the big deal.

O btw, if Russians really printed this Quran with the intention of showing good will to Muslim community then its a commendable effort on their part.

Its not the gift that Allah gave you but what you do with that gift that counts. Mind, yes he gave us, but if I use it to kill people, can it be a blessing?

Muzna I know its good to be practical all the time but sometimes we should let loose and enjoy. I know there is no purpose in giving some huge book but for love and friendship sometimes people do things. Exact example is when France gave US statue of liberty, it was to show friendship. I think we should enjoy the moment that atleast Muslims got something good. And if they want they can built a museum around this and earn money like people go to see statue of liberty. It is again just a thought that sometimes we need to enjoy not think practically all the time.

Agreed UZ. Sometimes we need to simply see something for what it is and nothing more.
And I can see how this might be the case for the Statue of Liberty.......America was not a nation in dire straits that needed to feed its hungry and clothe its naked. I am sure that Tartarstan cannot be compared to the state of the US at the time.

In any event......yes.....Muslims got something good. Alhamdulillah.
Let's now see what the Muslims do with this extravagant gesture.
I like your idea about the museum. That makes more sense than anything anyone has suggested so far.
This is the type of thinking that needs to be implemented.

I dont' know. It's nice, but I have to agree with Firenze, what is the point of so much opulence, when there are quite many for whom basic necessities (food, clothing, shelter etc) aren't even being met?
