Simple question: What do the terms Shia and sunni mean?
I think they are the short form of
Ahl-e-Sunnah-Wal-Jamaa'
and
Shiaan-e-Haidar-e-Karaar
ps. The emphasis is on "I think" :)
Hmm thanks Faisal ..can anyone provide an explanation and translation?
zakk
shia means follower..so faisal is right..we are the Shiaan-e-Haidar-e-Karaar Imam Ali :as:
sunni comes from a word sunnat…sunnat is what Prophet (pbuh&up) did…Imam Ali :as: did everything Prophet (pbuh&up) did so we believe we are the true sunnis ![]()
The word sunni in my opinion is derived from ahle sunnah waljammah as told by fasial
|However ..the word shia is basicaly an arabic word meaning friends…
Those ppl who supported hadrat ALi
in the wars b/w sahbah
were initially called shiyaan e ali ..the word later on used for this particualr sect …
walah o aallam
EDIT: ahlesunnah waljammah ..basically is a term derived from a hadith that those who will follow my sunnah and stick to jamaah will succeed …
so calling these ahlesunnah waljammah …ofcourse this is as according to sunni belive …
shukria guys. Someone said to be the word Shia meant the equivalent of political party or faction so I was a little confused
Just for the record my input:
Shiatul Ali : ("party of Ali") that supported the power of Hazrat Ali (ra) during the first civil war among the Muslims. It did start as a political movement laying claim that the Khilaafat rightfully belonged to Hazrat Ali (ra) and his descendants. Later developed into a sect within Islam.
Shortened to Shia – Partisan
*Ahlul Sunnah Wal Jama’a * - “The people of the traditional way (of the Prophet) and of the congregation”.
Meaning: The people who follow the Prophetic Sunnah and adhere to the largest mass of the Muslims beginning with the congregation of the Companions of the Prophet (saw).
Shortened to Sunni – Follower of the Way.
Shias = followers of Ali (a.s.)

In computer programming language we call it Recursion; a function calling itself. It gives errors if it is not defined well in the program.
