Re: The Wonders of Dubai
People around the world, especially the Muslim would used to admire us Pakistanis for the courage we had shown in building up our own nation. But sadly, this admiration is no longer there. People of Malaysia used to hug and call a Pakistani "BROTHER" but now..... No one bothers. Arabs had Pakistan in their good books, until some black sheep ruined it for us. I agree that we are being generalized for that. All of us arent the same but there is a THAPPA on us now, which is hard to wash.
Wrong, they hate Pakis and like Indians coz indians tolerate the insult better than Pakis, otherwise indians are not better workers. And another thing is that indians support each other much more than Pakis do.
Re: The Wonders of Dubai
First of all I am not angry... the purpose of my post was to create awareness as well as provide advice to Pakistanis that hey ...
1) we're not treated all that well in the UAE! 2) we should boycott going to these countries and spending $$$'s there.
Ps. 1) Im not indian. 2) Im a proud Pakistani... I realize that sometimes the truth hurts 3) You guys should go speak to Pakistani laborer's and the ghettos that they live. Yes it indeed was there choice to move to the UAE.. so spare me that argument. 4) last year there was this really awesome special on HBO about child camel jockeys from Pakistan, and the shoddy treatment they get! Watch it and forever hold your breath!
yep allof these issues are important but must be resolved individually by Pakistan Govt..so boycotting to go to these countries is not a solution neither criticizing them....:)
Re: The Wonders of Dubai
underthedome i'm i sorry didnt mean to discredit your thread. I just saw a video on one of the links you pasted. The one about The Palm resort/residences. Theyre all nice and dandy but to me personally they represent the height of materialism. I'd rather live a low profile life in my cozy apartment and take my chances in the next Life. Hey i'm taking God's word for it.
I'm marveling at how it's done. The creating of these Islands is pretty intense as is there up keep. Dubai is forward thinking in the fact they are creating a economy that is not just reliant on oil, selling (rather leasing) property to the rich and creating a tourist haven is something that many other oil rich nations aren't doing and Dubai deserves credit for this.
Re: The Wonders of Dubai
For clarity sake...Dubai hardly has any oil reserves. 90% of the nations oil reserves belong to Abu Dhabi, the remaining is shared among the other 6 states.
Whatever Dubai has achieved uptill now is dude to their own shrewd business sense.
Re: The Wonders of Dubai
^
Exactly, in 1990 the oil sector made up 35% of it's GDP today it's something like 8%.
Re: The Wonders of Dubai
How do the locals treat each other? Do they discriminate against each other? Not all locals share the same background, some claim ancestory in Iran, Turkey, etc, some from the Arabian province itself, and some are African.
Re: The Wonders of Dubai
Agreed, no harm in marvelling at whats being done and how its done. Though it is unfair to give all (or any) credit to Dubai when really its all a work of western technology and cheap eastern labour. Dubai can be credited for coming up with the idea of creating a tourist destination and all.
When you're at an art gallery you look at a beautiful painting and praise the artist, not the owner of the gallery. :)

Re: The Wonders of Dubai
Calm down folks, let's not castigate pinkie for telling the truth -- arabs are racist and Dubai/ UAE arabs are no different.
Pakistani investors should look forward to investing in Gwadar if it ever takes off that is.
Re: The Wonders of Dubai
Salam everyone.
Its nice to hear that some people agree with me.
Personally i dont think the UAE is being all too smart about its long term plans. Yes i do give them credit for coming to the realization that their oil will run out and that they should think long term
BUT
to be a tourist haven you need to have the following:
1) Cheap (compared to places like india, dubai aint cheap!)
2) Shopping (this may have been the case in the 80s and 90s not no more)
3) Historical Sites (Nill for the UAE)
4) Nice weather (that much is true.. especially if youre a Brit deprived of the sun)
5) Nice Beaches (sorry Dubai's beaches are far from crystal clear... try the Bahamas or Indonesia etc.)
6) Fun factor (sorry UAE chicks aint all that (id go to Italy for that) / booze doesnt run freely/ the beaches are segregated/forget about getting laid)
The reason why British folks go there is three things:
1) SUN SUN SUN
2) The get to do cool deserty things.. like riding all terrain vehicles in the desert or camel racing or jet sking etc.
3) THey get treated like royaly by the locals and even pakistanis/indians
Anyways if they were smart the folks from the UAE better think of what fortunes the Indians (who have a really rapidly expanding middle class) could bring!
Finally, its a myth that the Abudhabi has OIL and Dubai does not... everyone know that families in the UAE are intermarried and that there is no such thing... Sheick Macktoum is one of the richest men in the world... what got him there was oil!!!
Adios
Re: The Wonders of Dubai
Hahah.. I had a thread while back about this, difference between activities Americans did, and activities Desis did in Mid East.
Re: The Wonders of Dubai
What bothers me is the people who wonder at Dubai's marvels as if they were Dubai's own creations. Anybody ever cared to check Dubai's own R&D? They dont have any! All they have is bucketloads of money. Bring in technology from the west and cheap cheap labour from Bangladesh ($5 / day) and you have a great business venture.
Other places in the world might not be as breathtaking, but whatever they have is home made. The only thing Dubai can be really proud of is the money they have, which probably wont last long, soon after they run out of gas. Good luck to them anyway.

Hi Captain
I am extremely agreed with you. What is the level of pride for these arabs and dubaians. Nothing just God giftted money which ALLAH has even blessed to the worst in the world and Prophet described it as an exam.
Dear they have pride for just a world trade centre and the roads and new housing schemes. Is it for the people living in west?. I was just stunned when my friend in Dubai claimed that we made it happen to arrange the meeting of IMF without any problem ???/ The nations who r benefitting from imf and world bank mean lenders are not allowing them to carry on even their meeting in their countries and we r proud that w e made it happen. they r proud of Emoirates Airline??
INA LILAH WA INA ILAHE RAJEON and very soon they will be controlled by India.
ALLAH muslims ki haalat par reham karein
