Re: The Verdict | SC Throws Out Presidential Reference
The fact that the government accepts the decision of the supreme court pretty much proves conclusively that Musharraf is not a dictator - he willingly subjects himself to our legal system, whereas as a dictator is a law unto himself.
True Maddy!
Today, it has been proven that the highest authority in Pakistan is the Supreme Court and not the goverment, and not Musharraf. Which is a clear sign that for all its problems, our governmental system today under Musharraf is actually quite healthy.
I only hope that this sets a precedent so that once Musharraf leaves office and power is returned to the looters that democracy brings, the Supreme Court will continue to act as a check on government power.
True, and I hope so too. But somehow it all seems like a hoax at the moment. Has the judiciary REALLY come of age? Has it REALLY been strengthened? Strengthened against THIS govt yes, but is it also strengthened against the greater, older, graver threat from feudalism, elitism, industrialism, bribery, waderas, extremism, nepotism, racism, political influence as well as political influentials...?
Will the judiciary comprehensively remain strong agains all these enemies of law and order...? They have been able to fight the govt. That is this govt, which is under attack from every corner, so the judiciary took part in the royal rumble too and this govt insisted on not using any extra powers and hoped fair match like always (not sure if it was one though in the end), but will the judiciary; all judges and lawyers have the character, strength, moral stature to face, fight and win over the other curses half as boldly if not more...?
Just a rhetorical thought...
