the value of a PHD in society

alot of people, not sure if its only with desis, think the idea of higher education is odd. anything voer a degree, is something met with puzzled looks. my own parents and people in my fam who are educated, think its a good idea, but most dont. my husband wants to do a phd, alot of people have said why…mainly because those people have good salaries withuot even passing a gcse…so how can one explain the value/beneft of a phd…apaprt from the usual well money comes and goes, but an education is always there…i mean, realistilcally, will a phd ever come in useful…

Re: the value of a PHD in society

eduction is always usefull..and in many ways that can not be seen or might go unnoticed ..sort of like those intangible things that people tend to ignore!

It just changes your outlook towards the world, along with your approach to things.
And PHD is a great thing, you will feel good about yourself, and if the salary increases its for a reason. Its because you know so much more!

However, you should not let it get to your head. I am saying this because soemone in my family is getting his PHD and he thinks he is all that. And that he knows everything and is better then everyone!
It really annoys me. It seems like he puts people down!

Re: the value of a PHD in society

Beyond saying that your husband is doing it because he wishes to, I don't see why you have to give anyone more reasons. It's not any of their business, just listen politely to their opinion on it and then move on to other topics; no need for you to justify anything.
Yes, a PhD is a useful thing to have. It will increase salary, but on the flipside it narrows the field in terms of job opportunities. A great deal depends on the area of research, and whether it is useful to Industry and not just Academia.

Re: the value of a PHD in society

ask 'dr' :@: babar awan what a phd is worth :p

Re: the value of a PHD in society

You get education for your own good . As once my cousin said that ''pasa tu kunjroon ka paas bhe bohat hota ha '' :)

Re: the value of a PHD in society

A PHD brings a higher salary. But some employers might even prefer those with a lesser degree as it would mean having to pay them less. It also depends upon what "area" the PHD is in. For example, a PHD in biomedical engineering is likely to have a better job outlook than the same degree in let's say......philosophy.

Re: the value of a PHD in society

Absolutely no value except for the fashion statement that "Lookie here Ma! I is a fake doctor".

Re: the value of a PHD in society

No harm in getting higher education, but in practical terms, the value of a Phd differs from one discipline to another. In some professions, a Phd makes not one iota of difference in terms of career trajectory and options. For other disciplines, especially academia - it is the golden chalice and provides entree to certain professional opportunities.

As far as answering family members - it's no one's concern what a person chooses to study and why, so don't bother.

Re: the value of a PHD in society

You don't get a PhD because of the cache, you get it because either it is required for your career (for instance, to be a university professor) or because you want the knowledge, because you are deeply interested in the subject. If you don't want the knowledge, why do it? And if you do want the knowledge, why should anyone else's opinion matter?

Re: the value of a PHD in society

What is a PhD? One conducts original research in a particular area, and even though it doesn't feel like it to most PhD graduates, you are at the very least part way to becoming an expert on that topic. Even a number of students working under the same supervisor will have their own unique areas of research which they will understand much more deeply than their colleagues.

Some PhD's will improve job and pay prospects and others won't, even within a particular subject such as maths.

And I've just seen that Sehrysh has posted the same since I wrote this post.

Re: the value of a PHD in society

PhD ki qadar kisi PhD holder say poocho. You should ask this question to those who have done PhD or those who plan to do it otherwise you're not gonna get much positive info regarding this. But for once your assumption about desis, that they don't give a damn about PhD, is correct.

Re: the value of a PHD in society

its my father dream ... tht i shd do Phd ... i dont knw either i would b able to do it or nt ... he is ready to give all kinda financial suppport ... i guess i m nt ready to decide or select the domain for my phd within my field ... IT itself is such a big domain :(

Re: the value of a PHD in society

You do know that the term "Doctor" was only originally used for people who had received a doctorate degree (so people who had done a PhD) The term wasn't used for medical doctors until much later as they used to be called physicians...so they're not "fake doctors"

Nadz, like others have said it depends on what the PhD is and what he's looking to do after, some can definitely help improve prospects while others won't have such a great benefit. Does he really need to answer to relatives about what he wants to do?

Re: the value of a PHD in society

PhD's are NOT fake doctors. "Dakturs" are Doctors of Medicine. People with PhD's hold Doctorate degrees.

Re: the value of a PHD in society

CM enlightened, now thats a first :D

Nadz.... tell those people (very snottily) that money is not everything in life.
