Apropos to US role in Arab world: One must also acknowledge the fact that US SD has always distinguished between “good” dictators and “bad” dictators, in order to pursue their short and medium term interests. On one hand they tried discrediting reformist Arab leaders like Col. Nasser, and on the other, they are propping up one of the most regressive and autocratic regime in the region. The same regime, which incidentally, uses its petrodollars for spreading a poisonous ideology amongst the relatively tolerant Muslim populace of Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Malyasia and Indonesia.

I find it interesting that you find this article interesting. I expect nothing less from a neo-conservative bigot like Fouad Ajami. Yes, the issues in the Middle East are the simple result of a collective inferiority complex and “ambivalence toward modernity that torments Muslims.” What a load of Orientalist tripe.
