**Poverty rate rises in America

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) – About 46.2 million people are now considered in poverty, 2.6 million more than last year.

The government defines the poverty line as income of $22,314 a year for a family of four and $11,139 for an individual. The Office of Management and Budget updates the poverty line each year to account for inflation.

Middle-class wealth falls: For middle-class families, income fell in 2010. The median household income was $49,445, down slightly from $49,777 the year before.

More children in poverty: The poverty rate for children under age 18 increased to 22% in 2010, meaning more than 1 in 5 children in America are living in poverty.

South hit the hardest: For the fifth year in a row, Mississippi households were the poorest in the country, this time with a median income of $37,985. New Hampshire households had the highest median income, at $66,707.

Among different regions of the country, the South had the highest poverty rate at 16.9%, while the Northeast had the lowest rate at 12.8%.

The poverty rate was 13.9% in the Midwest and 15.3% in the West.

The income used to calculate poverty status includes earnings, workman’s compensation, unemployment insurance, Social Security, veteran’s payments, pensions, interest and dividends, and just about every other source of cash.

It does not, however, include capital gains, so, theoretically, millionaires could qualify as poor if they lived solely by selling off investments.

Non-cash benefits, such as food stamps or subsidized rents, also do not count as income.

The world is not sorry USA in problems because they made the world suffer for many years, but the rich in america wont be suffering it will be the people who already poor who will suffer even more which is sad.

I wouldn't be surprised if that African butcher Obama convinces the low-IQ american public that invading yet another innocent country like Iraq and then spending billions of dollars on the ensuing war and destroying hundreds of thousands of lives "is the way to go" and will lead to the "american dream".

Further, it won't surprise me if huge KFC and McDonald burger wielding over-sized Americans support this decision initially and later cry innocence since they were tricked into providing massive support for the latest war.

it is hardly a news to rejoice on others suffering while third world countries including pakistan are suffering like anything. where did you get this breaking news world is happy for suffering americans , world is not so small hearted like a coward's heart , why you have this pathetic and bad habit of being happy and celibrate when a fellow human being suffers even if he is an american .

USD 11, 139, that is almost a million rupee in Pakistan, anyone making a million a year in Pakistan is considered middle-class... the non-taxable ( direct income tax) is Rs 300,000/-...

Anyway, the one having wet dreams about USA going down just look at the UK and Russia, UK went down the same route some 70 years ago, yet it is still the most desired destination ( atleast for Pakistanies) and almost 2 decades back Russia went pear shaped and today it is doing lot better than Many Asian Countries...

USA may not keep up the 1st rank in global economy but it is not going to turn into Pakistan or India like economy... it is still going to be far better than us, the only way to destroy USA is, 1) somehow make a clone of NS and Zardari in shape and color of Americans and make them their ruler, 2ndly and more importantly, increase Religious Intolerance to extreme level.... then only USA will fell apart, other than that, i don't see it going anywhere in foreseeable future....

Even many of these Americans officially living below the poverty line are living like kings by Pakistani standards. And the US government and the well-to-do citizens are not indifferent to their plight. It might come as a surprise to some who are not accustomed to such practices in their own country but American citizens actually pay taxes instead of crying "corruption, corruption, corruption" and then happily shirking from their responsibilities!

Just read about Obama's plan to raise $1.5 trillion through tax increases, particularly on richer families earning $250,000 or more. The richest Americans already pay millions of dollars in taxes and yet we see many of the same people like Warren Buffet actively rallying to increase the tax rate on the rich which affects them. Can we expect the same from the rich in Pakistan? I think not.

Luckily the conscientiousness of Americans is well and alive. They WILL see to it that that their economy bounces back!
