First of all, what is the difference between calling someone fat or ugly? They are both adjetives describing someone’s physical appearance. Some people would rather be called ugly then fat. And there is nothing wrong with being either one of them. Allah (SWT) has made people in different shapes and sizes.

I was expressing my interest in starting a conversation with her, there is nothing wrong with that.
