The truth about kidney stones

Welcome. Perhaps small amount is OK. Drink extra water with those. And take calcium tablet with food containing these.

Re: The truth about kidney stones

I guess eating tomatoes without seeds is OK.

Can you explain how the calcium works against the oxalates in these foods? Sorry for troubling you but you seem like an expert in this area. Thanks.

No problem. If I know the answer, I will share.

The calcim reduces the oxalate absorption through the intestine.
So if the food has oxalate, the calcium does not let it go in to the body.
Calcium has to be taken at the same time with food for that.

Now if someone has high calcium in the body because of a disease of glands in neck (hyperparathyroidism) and they have stone problem, then clacium is not good for them.

Not an expert. It's all because of my kidneys...up there...

:Pointing to my head: :)

Re: The truth about kidney stones

OK now I understand. Thank you thank you!

Re: The truth about kidney stones

^Again, most welcome. Great questions.

Re: The truth about kidney stones

OK so I had a urologist appointment today and even though my lab results for the stone aren't back yet, he went through many many details with me including a review of my daily diet.

He said that people who go on high protein diets are very likely to develop kidney stones which probably explains mine because in the last few months, I've been on low carbs and high protein foods to maintain a healthy weight. He's asked me to avoid that in the future and stick to a well balanced meal plan along with daily exercise (and lots of water). Basically, he said that high protein low carb type diets are good but not for everyone and now that I have had one stone, I am in line for more, so avoiding this would be favorable.

Yes. He is right. High protien diet is shown to increase calcium in urine and coupled with oxalate can make stones of this kind.

Also 'uric acid stones' are the particular kind where high protien diet is not considered good since animal protien makes more uric acid. These stones are not so common.

Re: The truth about kidney stones

He also said that drinking "citrates" can actually help cut the stones or prevent formation of new stones and as silly as it seems, there's real benefit in drinking fresh lemonade (without the sugar and salt of course, and not Countrytime mix but made from fresh limes and/or lemons or concentrated lime/lemon juice that is available in bottles).

Re: The truth about kidney stones

So I've been fasting but since last night I've had pain in my right kidney area. I called the doc office today and they said that it's common to have this pain if you're not drinking enough water, especially if you'd had a recent stone and a ureteroscopy following it. Anyone with a similar experience?

Re: The truth about kidney stones

The other day on radio they were saying that drinking diet citric kind of soda dissolves kidney stones.
So I drink at least one glass of diet 7 up , orange crush , fanta etc everyday. As per that show coke or Pepsi do not work that way.

Re: The truth about kidney stones

I should get some fresca or lime soda tonite!

Very nice, thanks Mirch bhai!

Re: The truth about kidney stones

Swiss chard is also off the menu. But kale, collards, lettuce, bok choy, mustard and turnip greens are ok.

And even if I were a Muslim, I would not fast - or give yourself the dispensation of at least drinking water - I don't think Allah wants you to die a painful death in the name of Islam. Medical dispensation.

2 years ago, I had a kidney stone (oxalate-type) the size of a small bullet, and a kidney infection and toxic shock developed before the lithotripsy was done. The anaesthesiologist was looking at the bloodwork, noticed the extremely low platelet count on the day I went to emergency (like 30K instead of 150-300K!), and mentioned that a kidney infection can kill you in 24-48 hours.

Despite my moniker here, I dropped my black tea down to a small pot 5 times aweek, instead of 3 times a day. Green tea or oolong is better. I think taking black tea with milk as we usually do increases the risk.

Drink more water. That's the thing. Each day, I try to drink 2 1-liter bottles of water in addition to any other fluids. I refill a couple of glass bottles because I don't like to drink out of plastic. Also, I find that drinking warm water I can guzzle more, because cold water kinda chills my throat on the way down. Start guzzling that bottle, and when you think you can't drink any more, drink yet more!

To paraphrase the US Army slogan: "Pee all you can pee!"

Re: The truth about kidney stones

Oh - and as I had no insurance and zero income at the time, Medicaid stepped in to cover the treatment. Altogether, it came to $62,000. I kid you not. So drinking water is way cheaper!

Re: The truth about kidney stones

So lets say at this time I don't have a stone in me, if I were to drink very little water due to fasting, could I develop a kidney infection?

Re: The truth about kidney stones

I'm not a doctor (though I was married to one once...) but every time you let the fluids in your kidneys sit around and get concentrated, you are creating conditions for the development of kidney stones. Like making sugar rock candy by making a concentrated sugar solution and letting the crystals precipitate onto a string.

That's one of the things I wonder about lithotripsy - what if some of the little particles don't get peed out...do they becomes the seeds for more "pearls of pain"?

Re: The truth about kidney stones

Also, by drinking out of my personal bottles, I don't have to keep track of how many cups I've had that day, I just have to work my way through those 2 bottles. I can see very clearly if I've been drinking enough.

Re: The truth about kidney stones

thanks for the info.

Yes I do have a liter bottle for myself and try to drink 3 of those everyday...not possible during this month though, maybe that's why Im having the pain.
