The Troubles of Getting Back into Shape

Peace All

I am clinically obese, which I gather means my waist line is bigger than my hip circumference. I have a very high body mass index and my fitness levels are very low. I can’t run for a mile without stopping gasping for breath, but admittedly I try to run fast.

My problem is that I used to be a lot fitter, ironically one of the fittest and fastest in my year group from the ages of 19 and earlier. After 19 I started to do weight training which learnt towards body building, but then I stopped and I didn’t keep up any cardio work.

Now I am finding it difficult to build a routine to get back in shape. I guess I have managed to start working my midsection, but jogging is another option. I don’t want to rejoin the gym until I am sure that I will go regularly or else it will be a waste of money.

Any motivating suggestions?

I am in the same boat as you are. 11 years ago I started to gain weight and couldn't figure out why. Then, I started having memory loss, extreme fatigue and hot flashes day and night. Not only was I going through menopause, my metabolism bottomed out because I also have hypothyroidism. Due to both of these, I gained a lot of weight and it is hard to lose it. One doctor told me that I would never lose the weight I want to because my hormone system is so out of wack.
Well, now I refuse to believe that. I go to a gym 4-5 days a week, am eating healthier(I still fall of the wagon so to speak, at times, but getting better) and when I begin to feel like it is hopeless, I do this. I have written down the weight I want to be at, on several sticky notes and put them in every room I frequent the most in my home. Then, when I look at them I speak it out loud all day long every day.
Now, I have lost 10 pounds in 4 months. The thing is, keep active by going to the gym, or walking 20-30 minutes a day. It doesn't seem like a lot of weight I lost, but I lost it.
Hang in there, you can and will do it. You will succeed! :biggthumb

Re: The Troubles of Getting Back into Shape

Auto suggestion is the best motivator for losing weight. Keep repeating to yourself that I can loose weight , I can do this.

Re: The Troubles of Getting Back into Shape

Set a goal. Put it up where you can see it everyday. Build your stamina a little bit everyday. Don't look for results, focus on action. It takes time to build the momentum and once you hit it, you start seeing results thereafter.

I guess the biggest problem we have is that we quit too soon.

YOU CAN DO IT!

Re: The Troubles of Getting Back into Shape

Bro.. i know some people who had the best physiques of their lives and now they're ..well..more than overweight. I guess, what happens is you eventually start losing motivation and interest if u keep doin the same thing over and over, which is why so many people quit a lot sooner. Another reason is that people get new responsibilities, they get married..have kids..gotta take care of the family.. and they dont get enough time to look after themselves... Me on the other hand have responsibilities as well but i just cannot think about losing what i have achieved after working so hard!.. Just the thought of losing what i have right now (though, not enough) makes me wanna work more hard.

The first thing that u did wrong was that u stopped working out. Thats where the problem started. According to you, u were the fittest and fastest.. if u had to stop strength training, you should have just continued your cardio exercises.

Well, just try to remember what u used to do before.. the kind of schedule u had when u were a lot fitter.. try to have the same kind of meals that u used to have back then.. start off with brisk walking..gradually start doin jogging and then running for atleast half an hour a day. Do not do any kind of strength training for now. Remember..spot reduction isnt possible..that is ..even if you do 100s of situps, crunches..you will only feel your abdominal muscles but the fat will not disappear...to shred fat around ur tummy, you need to reduce ur body fat overall and that is only possible if you engage yourself in high intensity cardio exercises..swimming,walking,running ,biking etc.. Just give cardio a month or two until u feel that this is the weight u wanna work on..then u should start doing strength training.. target all of ur body parts after one or two months of cardio... start off with some light weight and high reps... gradually increase ur intensity...

You should keep in mind that the kind of physique now that you're looking for will require time. It cannot happen overnight. Proper rest, diet and proper training is what it needs to have a good physique.

I do not believe that anyone can motivate you unless you have motivation within yourself. I still remember the time when i used to workout all alone in my building's gym..and now by the grace of Allah im in a position where a lot of people come to me and ask me of what kind of routine and diet i follow..

You're a man .. think like a man.. you've achieved your goals before..you can do it again.. it shouldnt be a problem..it needs a lot of patience.

Bro.. no matter how much i write to make u motivate.. i will never be able to do it. See yourself in mirror and see what ur heart says.. if it says that u look good the way u are then stop worryin..but if it says something like " man, i really gotta get this fat outta my body" ..then you know what u need to do. The path isnt easy..but once u're in that right path..everything will get a lot clearer. Trust me and give ur best.. Go to gym.. have yourself a plan.. and do not do one thing over and over again..instead, look for alternatives..like if u can run on treadmill..why not run in park or at beach?..

I wish you all the best... its all in ur hands now..you either make it or break it.

FF great reply!

psyah…please do keep us posted. inshAllah if you want it you can achieve it. sorry for the cliche

Man you are good :hehe:

you pull the right strings

Seriously nice motivating speech :k:

Well jogging with clinical obesity might put too much stress on your joints, and I think you're putting too much pressure on yourself at once. Slow change is usually less shocking to your system and more effective.
Some ideas:
1. Replace all your drinks (soda, juice, etc) with water. This alone will cut out a few hundred calories.
2. Join the gym. Just knowing you've spent money might motivate you. If it doesn't, do what I do and allow yourself to only shower at the gym. After 2-3 days max, you'll be desperate to go to the gym and it will become your habit.
3. If you don't like gym, use the money to buy a weighted vest. Even if you wear it around the house, you'll be burning extra calories.
4. Working out 30 minute a day sometimes feel daunting. When people can't do their workout, they skip it entirely. Instead of doing that, just promise yourself you will work out at least 5 minutes a day. After the 5 minutes are up, decide if you want to do more. If you don't, don't beat yourself up--you did something more than before.
5. Get a workout buddy to motivate you. It doesn't even have to be a formal workout; sometimes I walk with my mom to the grocery store and we carry our food back...it is a good 40 minutes of walking and she doesn't even realize it.
6. Get a pedometer and try to increase your steps everyday.
7. try to understand what made you get to this position in the first place so you can change those circumstances.

It will also cut out essential nutritions & vitamins needed on a daily basis.

At gym:
-maximize sets & reps for extra caloric expenditure
-focus mainly on isolated muscle workouts

Nutritionally:
-consume carbs only though vegetables & fruits
-liquid carbs should only be consumed during workouts
-1:1 protein:carbs ratio should be estabilished

Cardio:
-done immediately after weight-lifting
-long, slow, and with intervals
-atleast 5-6 times a week
-done on empty stomach (quicker fat loss)
-if you want to retain muscle mass, consume a protein drink during the workout
