From the thread on du’a we discovered that Shaytan has these tricks that he uses to make us “abandon Allah (SWT)” and there are various ways he will try … so we should be aware of them inshaAllah.
1) The “I’m not good enough” guilt trip
Yes, you’re not good enough - that is exactly why you must continue supplicating and praying - Shaytan will convince you to come back when you are better, have more knowledge, etc … but these states are what make us better … the condition is a continual improvement so don’t fall for it.
2) The “I’m no hypocrite” declaration
It is true that the worst people or the lowest in hell will be of the hypocrites … but did you realise there are different types of hypocrites? Ones that are inconsistent with their principles and those who are hiding their hatred inside and work to destroy the good … the latter are the evil we learn about … however, those people who are “shy” of open sinning - like drinking alcohol and do so only in the home - they have a better chance to be rectified than those who openly drink because they want to avoid being “hypocrites” …
This is because the shyness is type of guilt that is then used as a means to bring a person out of the hole. So don’t lose your sense of shyness and guilt if you are doing something evil … always rebuke yourself after doing it and pray one day you are out of that state …
**3) The “not in my name” - disassociation
**If you see a religious looking person and see in their behaviour some ugliness don’t say “I’m not being like him or her” and then go off and become everything that they are not … because some parts of them are on the truth and some parts are not. Shaytan will convince you to throw the baby out with the bath water when it comes to piety. Many reject the outwardness because the inwards are not pure and many reject the inwardness of people because their outwardness is not up to scratch … Don’t disassociate - unify … Find the best in all states and try to adopt every one - but do so slowly.
4) The straw that breaks the camel’s back
It is unwise to take on too many good acts all in one go - because having lived a life of ease and sin and then to take on too many good acts together may be like a person who has never been to the gym to pick up heavy weights without prior training. Shaytan will assess that you have been given a lot of motivation and instead of stopping you may choose to push you harder, harder than you can handle and you fall flat and he takes pleasure in that. So take on good deeds one at a time making each one before it a habit before you choose to improve and progress, if at all you slip then move back again reinforcing the upward struggle.
5) Falling between gaps
Shaytan will try to convince you that you should only be concerned about what Allah (SWT) thinks. Yes, you should be afraid of only Allah (SWT), but that does not mean you should ignore others and how your interactions affect them. What happens is that when doing wrong you may be curtailed by your concern of how others may think of you … saying to yourself “I should only be afraid of Allah (SWT)” but then when it comes to Allah (SWT) you will say - Oh He is All Merciful and thus you fall between the gaps neither stunted by the perception of people nor from a fear in Allah (SWT). Remember, you fellow human, Muslim, family member are like mirrors - although we should not fear their opinion about us we should seek out some feedback from them in order to improve.
6) The final trick - arrogance
When you have beaten Shaytan left, right and centre, he will leave you … but after a long time he will make another visit … He will congratulate you and build up your nufs - ego … By being on the truth, he may say that you don’t need to try anymore and that you are too good … He will inculcate an arrogance in you that may be your downfall … to enter paradise we need to have no pride whatsoever … So don’t be proud with your religious successes - as you increase in 'ibadah force yourself to increase in humility and leave pride far away …
- The son of great Imam, Abdullah bin Ahmad bin Hanbal, narrates the story of his father’s death. Everyone knows that Imam Ahmad was pious and scholarly.
- When the death came near to him, he almost passed out. The people around him were saying, Laa ilaaha illallaah. However, he kept saying, “No…not yet, not yet.” This worried people around him. When Imam Ahmad came back to his senses, his son asked him about his statement. Imam Ahmad replied, Shaitan came to me and said: “Ahmad, you are free (meaning, I have lost you)!” To this, Imam Ahmad replied “No, not yet, not yet.”
Imam Ahmad meant that a person never gets rid of Shaitan until he dies.
