The Tragedy of Thursday

Sahih al-Bukhari Hadiths: 9.468 and 7.573
Narrated Ibn 'Abbas:

When the time of the death of the Prophet approached while there were
some men in the house, and among them was 'Umar Ibn al-Khatttab, the
Prophet said: "Come near let me write for you a writing after which
you will never go astray." 'Umar said: "The Prophet is seriously ill,

and you have the Quran, so Allah's Book is sufficient for us." The

people in the house differed and disputed. Some of them said, "Come
near so that Allah's Apostle may write for you a writing after which
you will not go astray," while the others said what 'Umar said. When
they made much noise and quarreled greatly in front of the Prophet, he
said to them, "Go away and leave me." Ibn 'Abbas used to say, "It was
a great disaster that their quarrel and noise prevented Allah's Apostle from writing a statement for them

It is narrated in Sahih Muslim that:

Ibn Abbas said: "Thursday! And how tragic that Thursday was!" Then Ibn
Abbas cried severely so that his tears flowed to his cheeks. Then he
added Prophet said: "Bring me a flat bone or a sheet and an ink so
that I could write (order to write) a statement that will prevent you
people to go astray after me." They said: "Verily the messenger of
 Allah is talking no sense."

Tarkil-Wasiyyah”, 1980 Edition, Arabic version (Saudi Arabia), v3,
P1259, Tradition (#1637/21).

Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith: 4.393
Narrated Said bin Jubair:

I heard Ibn 'Abbas saying, "Thursday! And you know not what Thursday
is? After that Ibn 'Abbas wept till the stones on the ground were
soaked with his tears. On that I asked Ibn 'Abbas, "What is (about)
Thursday?" He said, "When the condition (i.e. health) of Allah's
Apostle deteriorated, he said, 'Bring me a bone of scapula, so that I
may write something for you after which you will never go astray.' The
people differed in their opinions although it was improper to differ
in front of a prophet, They said, 'What is wrong with him? Do you
think he is talking no sense (delirious)? Ask him (to see if he is
talking no sense). The Prophet replied, 'Leave me, for I am in a
better state than what you are asking me.'

Then the Prophet ordered them to do three things saying: ‘Turn out all
the pagans from the Arabian Peninsula, show respect to all foreign
delegates by giving them gifts as I used to do.’ ** The third order was
something beneficial which either Ibn 'Abbas did not mention or he
mentioned but I forgot! **
Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith: 5.716
Narrated Ibn Abbas:

Thursday! And how tragic that Thursday was! The ailment of Allah’s
Apostle became worse (on Thursday) and he said “Bring me something so
that I (order) to write for you something after which you will never go
astray.” The people (present there) quarreled in this matter, and it
was not right to quarrel in front of prophet. They said, “What is wrong
with him? (Do you think) he is talking no sense (delirious)?”

“O you who believe! Do not raise your voices above the voice of
prophet … lest your deeds become null while you do not perceive.”
(Quran 49:2).

“Nor does he (prophet) speak out of his desire. (What he says) is
nothing but revelation that is revealed.” (Quran 53:3-4).
“Whatever apostle tells you accept it, and from whatever he forbids
you, keep back.” (Quran 59:7).

let me guess…

:ahaa:

the third wassiat was “take Ali (ra) as ur khalifa and mourn over the death of Imam Hussain (ra) till the day of judgement”…

right???

^^any problem with that?

All this is from your books so why dont u tell me? Surely u must have an explanation for all this. What was the prophet (pbuh&hf) trying to write that would "endure that muslims dont go astray after him" according to your beliefs?????? Forget what I believe, tell me what u believe.

and putting aside what the prophet (pbuh&hf) wanted to say, do you agree to the fact that the people who refused what the prophet (pbuh&hf) was offering them were transgressing limts?

JazakAllah brother picard. please allow me to add more:

When the time of the death of the Prophet approached while there were some men in the house, and among them was 'Umar Ibn al-Khattab, the Prophet said: "Come near let me write for you a writing after which you will never go astray." 'Umar said: "The Prophet is seriously ill, and you have the Qur'an, so Allah's Book is sufficient for us." The people in the house differed and disputed. Some of them said, "Come near so that Allah's Apostle may write for you a writing after which you will not go astray," while the others said what 'Umar said. When they made much noise and quarreled greatly in front of the Prophet, he said to them, "Go away and leave me." Sahih al Bukhari Arabic-English Volume 9 hadith number 468 and Volume 7 hadith 573

So if the book of Allah was sufficient for them, did they forget what Allah (swt) says in his book about the obedience of Allah and his beloved Nabi (saww)

4.59 O you who believe! obey Allah and obey the Apostle and those in authority from among you.

009.063 Do they not know that whoever acts in opposition to Allah and His Messenger, he shall surely have the fire of hell to abide in it? That is the grievous abasement.

004.042
On that day will those who disbelieve and disobey the Messenger, desire that the earth were levelled with them, and they shall not hide any word from Allah.

Surah Hashr verse 7: "And whatsoever the messenger giveth you, take it. And whatsoever he forbiddeth, abstain (from it)…."

Read the above ayahs and ponder what the present "companions" done to themselves by disobeying Allah (swt) and Rasulallah (saww). Specially the one who said Rasulallah is talking no sense.

oh come on guys, forget 'your book' and 'your book' ... those people shaped their lives upon the sayings and actions of the Prophet s.a.w. ... why wouldn't they listen to him in his dying moments?? common sense work at this point.

i realize its 'that time of the year' again ... but seriously give it a rest..

well in this case, we have a conspiracy of the last words and somehow Umar r.a. is involved ... u see where i am going with all this? shias: its time for remembrance of a disaster ... don't fight here for things that won't do good to anybody. sunnis: you have nothing to do with all the mourning etc. right? how about staying out of it? like diwali, easter etc. don't bother you, moharram shouldn't as well.

Yes you are going to right direction. Read the Ayay's again and the last sentences I posted above and rethink your beliefs.

Yeah!! It is also time to accept the truth that most of the companions were not loyal to Rasulallah (saww) and Islam. Even in Quran Allah has warned them a lot of times.

Read the event of Hudaybia and see who disbelieved the prophethood of Rasulallah (saww).

Many sunnis participate in moharram activities so comparing moharram with non muslim events shudnt be necessary for it to gain acceptance, as distasteful as that comparison is in itself.

Regarding your first part, thats exactly what I am asking. "why wouldn't they listen to him in his dying moments?? "
If ur implying that they would never do that, it would mean error on the part of the Sahihs. Why dont u clarify yourself.
