Coming to letters and numbers, letter shapes were invented before number shapes and the while there was no way found yet to write numbers people used to write words for numbers ie instead of 1 they used to write one. After that they assigned numerical values to letters eg ALIF=ONE.

As for taweez etc. these are simply put mind manipulating tricks which if one looks at works of psychologists they are explained. Ignorant people were always manipulated by clever people to benefit from their ignorance. So it continues even today because the world is full of ignorant and foolish people who do not bother to educate themselves to think things through. All magic tricks work on weak minds because they are locked in room by themselves and cannot find any way out of it because they have not learned what they were supposed to become aware of.

But still many peoples believe in it.
