Russia Threatens America
Russia has issued threats to America overnight, reminiscent of the Cold War period.

The Russians have not responded positively to America's plans to build part of its missile defence system in Eastern Europe.

In fact, Russia has threatened to neutralise any threat from the American missile defence sites.

Tensions flared again at a meeting in Moscow between the two countries' top foreign and defence representatives.

Our Moscow Correspondent, Emma Griffiths, reports.

EMMA GRIFFITHS: The talks didn't begin well. Vladimir Putin kept his American guests waiting for a reported 40 minutes, and when he did sit down with US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Defence Secretary Robert Gates, the Russian leader appeared to mock America's plans.

VLADIMIR PUTIN (translated): We expect that you will not be speeding up your earlier agreements with East European countries. One day you and I may decide that missile defence systems can be deployed on the moon. But before we get there, the possibility of reaching an agreement may be lost because you will have implemented your own plans.

EMMA GRIFFITHS: A Kremlin spokesman later explained the tone wasn't meant to be sardonic, but to emphasise that Russia would be ready to do whatever is necessary to counter any threats. And the Kremlin regards America's plans to base a radar in the Czech Republic and interceptors in Poland as a direct threat to the Russian state.

The US insists the shield will act as a defence against potential threats from rogue states like Iran and North Korea and will have no impact on Russia's security.

But these talks have failed to bridge those key differences. Condoleezza Rice and Robert Gates brought several new proposals to the table, including allowing Russian personnel at America's defence sites to improve coordination and openness with Moscow.

They didn't sway their Russian counterparts. Instead, Russia has warned it will take measures to neutralise the threat of America's system.

The stalemate left Condoleezza Rice talking of yet more negotiations.

CONDOLEEZZA RICE: Many of the ideas that we have go to the heart of trying to address Russian concerns both about how we come to a shared understanding of the missile threat. We believe that given the size and nature of this missile defence deployment that it could not possibly undermine the Russian deterrent. But we want to continue to have those discussions.

EMMA GRIFFITHS: Judging by these talks, it's hard to see relations improving any time soon. Missile defence has proved to be a persistent thorn in the relationship, and Vladimir Putin has now opened up yet another front in this increasingly tense diplomatic battle. He's threatened to withdraw from a key Cold War era treaty on nuclear missiles - the Intermediate Range Nuclear Forces Agreement. He wants other countries, such as China, to be included in its provisions, or Russia will pull out.

The issue will be added to the list of grievances between Russia and the United States, to be discussed when the top-level meeting resumes in Washington early next year

Re: The sign of 3rd world war trade and industry, the new battleground

not gonna happen ... not atleast the way you potray it.

USA vs Pak, Iran and Afghanistan is a no contest. USA can take care of all the three countries alone. this is not enough to start a world war, its just not enough reason to get other major powers involved.

China is america's stooge. china is literally contralled by american companies. russia is coming back from economic fiasco, they wont want to start a war.

the thrid WW will happen imo on the economic front.

Re: The sign of 3rd world war trade and industry, the new battleground

Russia is the only country with sufficient technological depth to reach and strike inside the USA - therefore USA will have to watch them really close. Putin has proved to be a very strong leader and Bush has proved to be the opposite. This has allowed some breathing room for Russia. Next US president is key to whether the world remains a single polar or becomes a dual pole as in the cod-war past.

China's entire economy & political system is surviving due to American market

Re: The sign of 3rd world war trade and industry, the new battleground

Except parts of Asia all other continents of the world are in relative peace. So why would there be a 3rd WW? I don't think so. Once Al Qaeda and other islamic extremism die down, all will be well

Re: The sign of 3rd world war trade and industry, the new battleground

The world is usually single polar and it should be.

Being bipolar is a serious disorder (ask any psychologist) therefore it should be avoided at every cost.

People who love to talk about WW III fail to grasp the reality that there is no Germany or Japan who is ideologically harping against the Anglo Saxon world.

Now back to to Iran and its comparison with pre-WW II Germany and Japan. Any sane analyst would say "ha ha ha".

For the planet to go unipolar, earth has to change shapes (to a cone may be?)

Politically - to be more accurate - economic and military strength'wise - speaking, I can see the downside of an unchallenged uni-polar power center. Don't we need something to counter-balance any excesses in agenda?

Recent American stupidity and oil might may combine to revive Russian pride and recreate a 2nd pole. China and India, even together, seem destined to be more dependent markets than the emerging super powers they seemed to be even a year ago!

EU is there to balance American influence. The problem with the "bi-polar" crowd is that EU may be less willing to support anti-American tin pot dictators.

FYI, the biggest pole now may be American power, but it includes every pro-Western country.

So at least for now, those antagonistic days of commie-vs.-Americans tussle are gone. Now we are kind of living in the large empire days like Ottoman Khilafah and Romans etc.

Time to come to grips with that fact.

Re: The sign of 3rd world war trade and industry, the new battleground

the 2nd pole if it emerges will not be EU which is a misnomer politically. RUSSIA

Yes Russia is the last great hope of all the socialists and anarchists around the world. They are all waiting for the day when Russians will dole out wads of rubles to anyone and everyone ready to spread anarchy.

This hope is not based on kham khiyali. Russia has a long track record of challenging the writ of many empires.

For example,

  • Russians bear tore through Muslim republics of Central Asia. Some of those torn areas are still hot e.g. Chechniya

  • Russians were the first to challenge Ottoman empire and grab Turkish territory.

  • Russians challenged British hold on Asia back in 1800s however they were beaten back by British Indian army.

  • Russians provided the lions share towards defeating Hitler

  • Russians challenged American dominance in many areas around the globe including Afghanistan. And Afghanistan as a result is still in ruins.

So lets see if Russian gets a backbone to challenge USA again. it doesn't look like though. They are becoming too much of neo-capitalists just like the old-commie neo-capitalist Chinese.

Re: The sign of 3rd world war trade and industry, the new battleground

If people (global) have learnt anything from past then chances are there won't be a world war. In today's world too many countries have tied "economical" knots in way too many places, there really isn't clear-cut "side" now. Until China and India (and other commie/socialist) countries are dependent on US economy there isn't going to be a third world war atleast openly, there might be "proxy" wars like Afghanistan (80s) but no direct conflicts.
