In 1939 US employment rate was around 18% and the economy was in pretty bad shape after the stock market crash. WWII created bigger military contracts thus more jobs. For example car factories were manufacturing tanks. The whole peacetime industry was converted into wartime industry. More than $175 billion worth of contracts were given to companies like Ford, GM, Boeing. These were all signs of good economy. Government spending on military contracts became the ‘fuel’ for the growing American economy.
