The shattered image...

Re: The shattered image…

Are you kidding me? US was itching to get into war because that was the only way they could save the frail economy. Japan had no choice other than to attack Pearl Harbor because U.S. increased military and financial aid to China, embarked on a program of strengthening its military power in the Pacific, and cut off the shipment of oil and other raw materials to Japan. US tempted Japan to attack PH so that it would give them an excuse to join the WWII.

Re: The shattered image...

Every great country has its downfall. Ours began when Bush came to office. May God help us and deliver us from the idiots.

Re: The shattered image…

How did going to war save the US economy? The USA ended up deeply in debt due to having to spend on war materials, plus men were transfered from economically productive tasks to military service instead.

The US military and financial aid to China was pretty much insignificant, as witnessed by victory after victory of the Imperial Japanese Army. The USA took purely economic action against Japan, but also went out of the way not to provoke Japan through not reinforcing its Asian outposts. For example, the US Pacific fleet was kept at Hawai, rather than than at the Phillipines where it would have directly threatened Japan.

Similarly, the USA econonomy and war machine were firmly on a peace footing until after December 1941. The Air Force and Army were tiny compared to 1941 British, German, Italian or Japanese forces. There is no evidence beyond paranoia to indicate that the USA was expecting to get directly involved in the war.

Re: The shattered image...

MS...It is common knowledge that when US got into the fray, that is when the depression ended, and since that time, everytime the economy slumps, there is a war...Why?

When war happens, the country goes into overdrive, billions is invested in war and millions of jobs open up...Stocks, war bonds, industry, all go up...When people have money to earn, they have money to spend...

Re: The shattered image...

The theory would work, except for the fact that the Great Depression ended in 1938 as a result of President Roosevelt's New Deal programme. - 3 years before the USA entered the war.

Re: The shattered image…

In 1939 US employment rate was around 18% and the economy was in pretty bad shape after the stock market crash. WWII created bigger military contracts thus more jobs. For example car factories were manufacturing tanks. The whole peacetime industry was converted into wartime industry. More than $175 billion worth of contracts were given to companies like Ford, GM, Boeing. These were all signs of good economy. Government spending on military contracts became the ‘fuel’ for the growing American economy.

Re: The shattered image…

where does this money come from? I understand war could be benficial if it is between other people and you are sitting on the sideline selling them equipment and your economy booms or you provide war servcies and get paid like Musharaff doing these days…neither was the case of WW2 and this present war.

Notion that war invigorates economy is due to the fact that during war our Government spends the money or budgets teh money to be spent on arms etc that goes into economy right away and provides jobs during the war…but as the war ends, Governmetn realizes they ahd spent the money they did not have to begin with, so taxes go up or some other programs get chopped and hence economy or country suffers in the long run.

War does nto generate money…it makes the government to spend it faster than normal hence putting government money in private sector.
