The seven braids

Is anyone familiar with the rasam of the bride braiding her hair into seven parts on her mehndi night and then (7 of) the older female relatives from the grooms’ side undo them?

What exactly is the significance of this? And is it true that only married women can participate in this?

Re: The seven braids

wat if u only have 7 hairs that'll only make 3 braids :(

Re: The seven braids

i have heard of the tradition except i can’t remember where i heard it :frowning:

i thought it was a kashmiri tradition so i googled it a bit () and i found this article about how the girl braids her hair (doesn’t specify how many braids) and then the married women of the household unbraid it. it’s supposed to be the day before the mehndi function. maybe i’m wrong and some of the other kashmiri members here can clarify me. i would love to hear more about it.

Re: The seven braids

thanks for the link shay, very informative.

Now I have another question... my sister-in-law is going to be holding a jora day... I'm not so familiar with this either... is this where they show the stuff that the guys side has given the bride or do they show off the stuff they're sending their daughter away with (jahez).... And if its the former, are we, the groom's side allowed to stop them from doing so?

Re: The seven braids

i think thats a very common tradition- some families like to display EVERYTHING they are giving to their daughter at the mayun or mehndi.. some even hold an exclusive day just for that. i haven't seen many display the grooms side of the stuff so much. in our family, the inlaws just show some clothes on the wedding day and the jewelry they are giving. i dont like both the traditions though. you never know who may put bad nazar and what not. besides, whats the point in all the show offing?

Re: The seven braids

Not families with tat .. but in my culture.. 7 single girls put mehandi on girl’s hand… i don’t know the significant of tat.. but i remember once in Pakistan my mom didn’t allow me to put the mehandi and when i asked her why .. she was like “Tumhain shadi karnee hain” main nay kaha nahi then she replied “to per mehandi bee nahi rako” :bummer:

ab sochtee ho kash haan kardaytee :cb:
btw i love mehandi functions.. they are soo nice rasams.

Re: The seven braids

Yeah, we have that also. Seven married women do the hair thing, and seven single girls get to do the mehndi. And I agree, mehndis are the most funnest celebrations!

Re: The seven braids

In multan you have the braids wali rasam..from my mom's side they have endless rasam's! With married ladies...and mayun..and carrying "matka's" and bathing the bride ugh!
