The original Exorcist was scary, but I find The Omen which was released may e a year after The Exorcist to be more creepy.
I had high hopes for The Conjuring as so many said it was scary, but I thought it was okay. Not such a big deal.
The first Paranormal was scarier than the subsequent ones. If my spouse went down to the basement in the middle of the night and starts screaming I will not rescue him…I will leap from the nearest window and get the hell outa there. Seriously who doesn’t turn on the lights at that unearthly hour?
