The Salary Question

Re: The Salary Question

Just give her some outrageous number so she can faint. The call some ugly dude to give her CPR :D

Re: The Salary Question

Ah yeah. I actually told my new colleague what it was, because the question was so sudden I couldn't skip round it. I pretty much know the salaries of everyone at our company, I was using the HR guy's computer (was having trouble with the scanner on mine) and there it all was. Made me feel like I undersold myself.

Re: The Salary Question

@ Sheyn,

Its so ajeeb, someone I meet infrequently after work and only know because of those meetings that they work for the same co. as I although in a different dept., pulled this on me.
I was asking what he does since he is in IT and the co is a manufacturing OEM. So he ended up saying he was on contract.
Guy: tau aap kiya pakkay hain ****(co name) main?
Me: (shocked to see him asking such a question) flinched a bit, then said; jee.
Guy: konsa grade heay engineer ya manager?
Me: (thinking inside - dude…you are not gonna stop are you?) - engineer…
Guy: Konsa grade heay engineer ka 6,7,8 - kiya?
Me: (oh my God - give me a break - I am like…) mera khayal experience walay log 8 main hee hain…
Guy: Kiya hundred thousand dai-detay hain 8 kau?
Me: (you have some nerve bhai jan…) I just broke out laughing at his persistence…while he was asking all these things with quite a straight face..
so I go: Is say bhee ziyadah mil jatay hain…baaz manager complain kartay hain is baat kee…

So after that he made me feel so uncomfortable and all I can think of the guy are STEREOTYPICAL definitions of people from his side of Pakistan. I know its not rigtht to do that..but I am like…why did I even talk to you yesterday bro…why…don’t you have any common sense…

 and : embarrassed:

Re: The Salary Question

:hehe: hehe

Re: The Salary Question

That's the right thing to do i guess. Only my HR people (other than myself) fall in the list who know my exact salary. Funny enough, that none of my immediate family member even asks for it, or perhaps they are just not interested :)

Re: The Salary Question

My answer to such direct question is usually, 'in this industry, for someone with my experience, the pay is usually between X and Y rupees/dollars'.

So i dont tell them my salary but i give them the range.

Re: The Salary Question

i answer to that question differently
claim a made up number in dr evil style with the pinkie action going... one hundred billion dollars
ask them if they are doing research on the field for someone
joke and say well after begums shopping its just a few sikkay left for me

or how is this..are you asking for base or base plus stock options, bonuses other allowances and deferred compensation etc.
and when they think they got me just say, oh yeah I can not disclose that :D

OMG that is EXACTLY how she grilled me !!! Right down to the penny !!!

Finally I told her see its like this , since Im basically in Charge they have left it as an open contract and we will negotiate the figure as soon as the month is up depending on how many hours I wish to put in but its definitely way more hours than yours !Baby eat your heart out !!! :hehe:

My problem is when you know the other person isnot getting half as much as you are its kinda awkward to share a range ; especially since this woman asked me in front of other staff who were making peanuts , so I felt its wrong to say you earn well :bummer: and secondly you know desis the moment they get wind of such info they come knocking on your door for loans **

Re: The Salary Question

Re: The Salary Question

cellphones were not common,
internet connection was mostly via modems.......cheeeeen chirkhhhhh cheeeen...takh takh takh...
what a pace of change

Re: The Salary Question

10 yrs doesnt seem like so far off when you think of it !

Re: The Salary Question

i hate it when people do that - i work part-time and when i went to pakistan, so many people asked me how much i earn and how many hours blah blah! and then someone close in hubbys family kept asking me how much he makes, i said why don’t you ask him when he comes over in a week, they were like no is it over £100 k? they kept throwing figures at me :bummer: .. i didn’t tell .. he also asked about a couple more family members pay in UK  .. then i was talking to his wife in the evening and said it is considered rude to ask someones pay and even i don’t know my close relatives pay in UK coz we never ask! the next time her husband started about it again, she told him that
