To answer my wife’s (hareem01) question …

Ok I think we need to understand that there are two types of people:

abusers and abused

the majority of abusers are those people who should be carers and people in charge
the majority of abused are those people who should be cared for and are dependants

The abusers betray their authority by inflicting physical harm.

Now the OP question was that do the abused (i.e. those who are subordinate, cared for, or dependants) provoke?

However, my wife has turned the question the other way round … she is asking if the boss provokes … the answer is that it is unlikely the boss provokes - physical abuse … rather the boss is the one who will resort to physical abuse and provocation from a boss is considered abuse anyway … because the other party is bound by rank not to respond in kind.

The OP wanted to see if the “less dominant” of the two persons provokes, but the question raised by my wife is asking what we would do if the “more dominant” provokes … these are two different situations entirely.

although in most cases the abuser may be in a more dominant position…not necessarily so.

if we take the boss example: lets say you are provoking the boss by arriving late every day…in that instance he can only do what’s allowed, give you a warning and then fire you…he still cant raise his hand or verbally abuse you…cuz then he’s answerable to the law.

so in domestic abuse then…lets the one being abused isnt listening to you (lets say its your kid>> not doing certain chores, not following rules of the house)…you can talk to them, warn them but you may not resort to physical abuse no matter what…it wont ever be justified. and if the child says mom/dad hits me and they see signs of physical or verbal abuse you will be held accountable..the fact that you were provoked is not an excuse.
