The role of mobile phones / Blackberry, etc

What roles do mobile phones / Blackberry, etc play in teenagers’ lives? How far are they good for them? Or how far are they bad for them?
Would you easily let your teenagers use them often?

Re: The role of mobile phones / Blackberry, etc

i used to be very against these devices for teenagers... unfortunately, every generation evolves, the cellphone/smartphone is this generations "Phone in my room" equivalent. I remember when we were teenagers, having a phone in our room with a second line for mostly our use was THE thing to have. Unfortunately, most teens already have these devices and if you keep your teen from having them, they will be ostracized and also excluded from a lot of activities given that mobile facebooking, texting, and messaging is the new "phonecall" or a "note passed in class".

I don't want to claim that I will NEVER give a cell phone to my teenage child, but I have to admit that I will be very careful and would like to monitor their activity on it.

I've seen many teenage girls who spend all day chatting and texting...I'm not sure how healthy it is.

I don't agree to with 12-14 year olds having cell phones. I see my little cousins spend all day chatting or texting...and really I don't see a reason for them to have one.

I got really annoyed this one time when my two cousins kept texting each other at a family event when they were in the same room...I thought it was rude.

I'm not against teenagers having cell phones, but I would monitor their activity and have rules about etiguette
