What are your views on both players being considered for Test recalls?
Goughie’s been performing decently in the ODI’s but I don’t think he’s faring as well in multi-day games on the domestic circuit. I’d still support him being drafted back in; he was the only world-class fast-bowler the poms had over the last decade after all.
Thorpe’s return is a different story though. I feel a bit sorry for his situation - he was the cornerstone of England’s batting lineup when he was dropped. And then his personal problems etc. took time to deal with. But Gatting is right by calling his possible recall an extremely delayed one. For all his experience, it won’t serve much purpose in a team building a nucleus for the future.
The failures of Robert Key et al don’t seem reason alone to bring him back. There are other younger players that should be tried instead.
2 very over rated cricketers.
They are only good because other crappy players in the team make them look good and the English media has the habit of over rating some of their players.
They wouldn't even find a place in some other teams, maybe in Bangladesh.
Diablo Kazama, I think both Darren Gough and Thorpe should be recalled. Darren has proven himself quite well in the 4 day County Championship games and Thorpe has been finding some pretty good form lately, too.
Darren has been dreadfully unlucky with injury but I have a feeling he may just about get back into the side. Richard Johnson is hardly ever injury-free and James Anderson is young and I think the side needs the experience - Darren will come back into the side and if he does it will be good.
As for Thorpe, well he has had a lot of personal problems, pulled out of tours and changed his mind at the last minute - He may not get another chance. He does deserve one but he may not get one. I think it will be in England’s best interests to pick him but alas they may just prefer Robert Key to him.
Anyway, it will be interesting to see what the selection is - Hopefully Gough and Thorpe will both be included.
goughie has been recalled but thorpy no, that's a shame graham thorpe is by far the most consistent batsmen in the frizzell county championship this year... he has been getting decent knocks for surrey, but obviously that isn't enough to please the selectors.
It’s a shame - There is no doubt in my mind that Thorpe is far better batsman than Anthony McGrath - Why there’s a need to call back Alec Stwart when Chris Read has been doing a fine job? I think the selection for first Test is kinda weak - England could have got better selection as they will be tested against a second top Test team - A good start of rebuilding process but without much support from the middle order it is going to be tough task for England.
Well yes McGrath is well composed but doesn’t have much experience in Test Cricket as Thrope got - The England team needs talent down the middle order - Since Gary Kirsten will be back it was a good decision to include Darren Gough but leaving out Thrope, England could be in deep trouble - Well, that’s what I think - I hope England do good against South Africa.

Class act compared to Rikki Clarke and Anthony McGrath sure.
They get spanked by Aussies everytime.
I am telling you man, England hasn't had a world class cricketer since Botham, others have been bits and pieces, they all come and go.
