The Problem with Paan

Finally I’ve found a desi butcher shop that I like to go to. It’s near my house, clean (on the inside) and more often than not, well stocked.

The guys that work there are polite, courteous and I have yet to catch any of them leering at the female clients.

Now…here’s the problem…

In the front of this dukaan, there is a small counter operated by an older gentleman that sells paan.

Now don’t get me wrong…I like meetha paan as much as the next person…but I’ve had it with trying to walk into the store while avoiding stepping in the remains of other people’s paans.

It’s absolutely disgusting.

Can someone please explain to me why the need to spit? And if you really and truly must, then why not in the garbage pail or somewhere I don’t have to look at it!

Re: The Problem with Paan

i guess this is the best part of eating pan !

SOS

Re: The Problem with Paan

Come on, think about it.Ordinary spit, white/green and gooey.Paan spit, red with chunks of stuff. So much cooler and the satisfaction of painting the ground red.

Re: The Problem with Paan

Is it a wonder that the areas where desis live so quickly turn dirty and ugly?

Paan is not the biggest part of it.......I've seen people throw litter from their cars.....everything from empty cigarette packs, to soda cans to balled up dirty diapers. Sheesh!

How difficult can it be to collect this stuff and put it in the bin. It's not like there's a shortage of garbage containers provided by the city.

Re: The Problem with Paan

Muzna same question i used to ponder but then at the end i came to realize that these same people r the one who act the same way back home in pak...no one cared there so the habit build up on.

Re: The Problem with Paan

This would be kinda harsh but a call to city hall might do the trick. I'm sure there are health inspectors who would be very interested in checking the shop out. But then, you wouldnt want your favourite butcher's shop closed down either. If only there was a more subtler way!

Sincerely,
Captain Lota

Re: The Problem with Paan

what about talkin it out with the owner. Get a community involve in it and if he still don't do anything...warn him :D

Re: The Problem with Paan

hmmm interesting ..

well, i guess ppl want to show off that they can take the juice out of pan and are smart enough? not to eat the stuff thats dangerous for their health..

on the other note... if ppl are trynna create a desi area, then it makes sense... in our desi side of the city, ppl worked mighty hard to give it a desi look and feel. At first, they created countless desi restaurants on one particular street so that every one passing by can smell the food & recognize that its a desi area;;;; that wasn't enough., so they started writing their menu on the restaurnt windows with urdu... that worked for sometime, but apparently not enough. So now, they are encouraging spitting pan all over that street to finally end the left ignorance... But kambakht Goras still come there --- now with all those failures, Reckless driving and honking has been encouraged to finally route the non desis out... I just hope it ends there :( varna they have plans to launch a W-11 on that street with full decoration n the twister sound effects for the horn.

Re: The Problem with Paan

urban legend has it that in some country a desi gentleman was picked up by health authorities who were alerted that he was spitting blood.

Re: The Problem with Paan

thats different than what Muzna is tryin to say that is it necessary to make ur environment dirty just to give it a desi look?

Seriously, 3 yrs ago i went newyork and happened to go in that desi area with my cousins.....arrgghhh...i couldnt breath in that area. So smelly and dirty!

Re: The Problem with Paan

I actually have complained to the store management. Let's see if they give a damn. I don't know how they would police something like this though.

If it doesn't stop I will have to contact the city.

Re: The Problem with Paan

:cb:I LOVE MEETHA PAAN!

Re: The Problem with Paan

barfee loves meetha paaan...yeyyyy!! uss kay ander barfee houtti hai kiya?

Re: The Problem with Paan

^Wohoo! I wid ya… lemme know where and when to come with you to go all party pooper on pan spitters. Plus add one more, ppl throwing lit ciggi butts should be fined like million dollars too :grumpy:
I know exactly what you mean by desi going all ‘throwy stuff’ as soon as they see a zone marked ‘apna ailaka.’

ps. 'n he thinks I’m such a geek, picking up after him. Once he’s like to Sarah, Oh I’m leaving a ‘hensel and gretel trail’ incase we get lost

Re: The Problem with Paan

Thanks God, paan is banned in the UAE :)

Re: The Problem with Paan

Yuck, what are you? Bengalis?

Re: The Problem with Paan

Good job Muz....I would have definitly reported it myself to Peel board :DThese kind of people need a lesson in cleaniness.

Re: The Problem with Paan

Wasn't there an incident not too long ago (somewhere in the UK, I think) where the local townspeople noticed that there were dark spots all over the park walks, sidewalks, etc. They came to the conclusion that it was the droppings of some sort of animal, or a fungus.

Apparently the place was infested by Sikhs or something and they were actually marks from the leftover paans the local desi community had been slobbering all over.

Grrrross :)

Re: The Problem with Paan

I thought the Sikh community does not consume paan.

Re: The Problem with Paan

In my country

Clean Butchers mean more often than not that the meat is haraam
There is an unwritten law that Halaal butchers must wear blood spattered overalls and pick up dead carcases from a heap in the corner of the room, take the lil animals staring forlornly at them..... chop them and squish them up infront of you all the while inhaling ciggerettes of dubious nature .... they do not however leer at women because we are very respectable in the realm of her majesty.

As for the spitting..I only know of one place that sells paan...but i havent seen anybody spitting it out onto the pavement...

I was always told that its very rude for ladies to chew paan ...Is that true?
