.. and we thought they are being really honest when they put up promotional products with signs like “bigger pack” " better value" !!
Check this out , some of the tactics used by retailers these days :
Product is sold at an inflated price for a limited period at low volume in just a few stores, then rolled out across all stores at the lower price - known as "yo-yo pricing"
The “discount” price period lasts much longer than the original higher price period, making the discount price really the normal selling price
Using a previous selling price from months ago as a comparison
Charging one price in store A, a lower price in store B, then saying “was £x, now £y” when the higher price was never actually charged in store B
Saying a product price has been reduced without mentioning that this is only because the package size has shrunk
Buy One Get One Free deals where the same volume of the same product can be bought more cheaply in a larger pack
As an ordinary shopper I have found it quite challenging to believe/trust the "special offers" they give .. The other day I was at a halal KFC and I saw an offer on Zinger burger being offered at a special price of £3.50 .. I thought wow thats almost 50p lesser then its actual cost ..
And when the burger arrived, I realized they have significantly reduced the size of the burger .. at that point I knew that a better option for me to choose out of their menu, would be two baby burgers costing 99p each and that would actually save me a £1.52 !!!!
hahaha…true…haven’t you seen flyers telling us that 70% OFF…when you walk into the store you find one old, stupid looking thing at 70% off…you wonder then someone tells you…it’s UP TO 70% off…
that’s what happened to me in the first month of my arrival in Canada!
they tend to satisfy the LAW rather than the customers! cheating at it’s best! they just want your foot into their stores!
omg , KKF , that tactic is the worst of them all , I hate stores that do this .. Here in the UK as well, there are many who do this .. they will have huge posters on their sites or shops showing 50% off and step in to check the prices they will still be expensive, when you ask what is 50% off , they point to a measly little corner saying that stuff is all UPTO 50% off
I dont shop in such places anymore , total rip off !
Actually, a question comes to mind, some of these large supermarkets have buy one , get one free promotions of food items like Cheese ..
how do they make money on such deals?
these are bulk purchases...they want to get rid of the inventory. sometimes, they also have expiry date of the stuff looming so they just sacrife their profit margin and put things on sale.
here in Canada these days, they advertise 3 for $5 or 5 for $10 and if you buy single then you pay quite a bit more. but there was resentment among shoppers so most stores allow to buy one at the same discounted price. their target are seniors, new immigrants who do NOT know the system and end up buying more than what they need in order to get a cheaper price.
i think that should fall under 'misleading advertisement' :)
hahaha…i know what you are talking about. it’s so annoying!
another gimmick in furniture business.
they do NOT have much sales during the week in winter months so what they do is a triple prong gimmick.
they put out huge sign boards everywhere that says…“GIANT SALE!!! we’ll be closed on Tue, Wed and Thu to get ready for the BIGGEST SALE of this Century on FRI, SAT and SUN!”
this way they save employee salaries [most salesmen are partly salaried] and make people believe it’s a REAL sale and hope to do better business on the weekend…in other words, the store is open 3 days a week instead of 7. what a sneaky way to do business!
