IMO whatever chances he had (if there were any) has been washed out due to the assassination of BB. He is not going to come out in public and say that he has no chance of becoming PM. Of course he is going to paint himself "confident". He is aiming high and I am sure in the end he will accept CMship in Punjab.

^ You are speaking as if the following two things are actually true

i) Chaudhry Elahi was set to sweep the polls had BB not died
ii) The polls would actually be 'free and fair'

You are trying to put words in my mouth. You are trying to associate a post to me that I never did.

I actually said "whatever the chances were (if there were any)" and not "he was sure of becoming the PM before assassination"

The whole reason why they were so against Shuaky Aziz was so that they can put him (Elahi) up for premiership.
