They live in Pakistan. They earn and flourish in Pakistan. And they pay it back to Pakistan.
Yet, they do it discreetly. but I know some of them. I am talking about individuals.

what do you mean by discretion?
Isn’t zakat suppose to be deducted from your salaries/savings accounts automatically unless you fill that zakat deduction form claiming that you are from a different sect. Wasn’t that the reason ppl use to empty their savings account before zakat deduction?
I mean that’s how I remember it was happening when I was in Pakistan

Majority of middle/upper middle class Pakistanis may not be formal members of charities etc but they do give out a lot informally to certian charities and to needy people.
I have seen this:
Doctors helping out poor patients with test and medicine expenses, helping out domestic worker's families with food, education of their children, marriage expenses, giving to local orphanages and madrasas etc
A lot of people give out to edhi foundation and Shaukat Khanum cancer hospital too

Its common in Islamabad for families to feed 80 to 100 people daily for iftar. And others give food on a daily basis in areas of the different markets. It is even pronounced in Lahore in Karachi.

I was saying that there are people (one person) who are paying zakat in millions of dollars in Pakistan.
Otherwise there are millions of Pakistanis who pay Zakat.
1 million dollar is a huge amount of money if i am not wrong. And doing that in Pakistan. Dont you think it is insane ?
This man runs a resturants for people from all walks of life. 2 of them in this city at key locations. The resturant is open 6 days a week and runs for 12 hour daily. People go there and eat and go back to their work. The resturant does not charge anything from its customer . It attracts large number of people daily. roughly 4000~5000. These are quite loyal customers btw.
Now use a calculator. 5000 people enjoying good food daily. How much its cost the resturant has to bear ?
I live here, I know the cost of food, administration, rent , utility bills and salaries of emloyees.
Guess ? It is simple. The cost of serving food is nominal. $1 per head. :k:
there are 2 resturants in the city, roughly bear the expense of $10,000 per day.
The cost for a week is $ 60,000/-
The total lump sum yearly cost (300 days ) of running these 2 resturants in one city is ummmmm
it is $ 3 million
I am not going to name but he is a business tycoon. He is Real estate king. A billionaire in dollars hands down.
Now here is another city, The financial Hub of Pakistan. There is another person who does that all year around with same magnitude. You know the name.

There are people/organizations out there who are cooking food everyday for nearly 100,000 people affected by flood in All parts of Pakistan. You know how does it costs in pakistan ? The amount of money if you have you can buy A BMW 5 series or Mercedese E class every day.
Preparing food for so many people and delivering them withing hours is hell of task. Imagine how can group of people can do this. they cook 1000 daig simultaneously. cooking this much requires lots of space and at leat 500 cooks and helpers. Lots of transport to deliver grain, rice ,meat etc. And again transport to deliver these daig and food to people in camps. And at the same time when there is a fuel shortage due to roads/infrastructure breakdown. It is beyond my comprehension.
Yet this number 100,000 (one hundred thousand people only) comprise just a fractional 0.5% of total affectees.
Thats why we need to do more.

I have a distant relative in Pakistan, whom it took years to build his own house. Just when it was ready, there was crisis of IDPs of Swat. He continued to live in rented house and gave his own house to IDPs, 8 families lived there for nearly a year.
This time around one of my friend and all his colleagues gave the whole of their salaries for flood relief, making it difficult for themselves even to pay bills.
A family friend has donated 150,000 dollars for flood relief alone.

Please all remember though $500 dollars donated by a poor person may be better than $1 million by a tycoon. The wisdom behind this is that the sacrifice of the poor person may be greater. A better question to ask would be what proportion of wealth is given in charity, and an even better question should take in to consideration that for poorer people the 10% they may give is more critical to them in actual value than 10% would be for a richer person.
10% given by a person who earns $20,000 per year comes to $2000, leaving only $18,000 to live on. 10% given by a person who earns $200,000 per year comes to $20,000, leaving $180,000 to live on. If basic needs are covered by an amount of $17,000 per year then this means $1000 are left for luxury in the first case and in the second case that would leave $163,000 for luxury of the richer person.
Those individuals who give charity in large amounts in my view are no better than people here on this forum.

It is not any way a comparison wealth and charity. It is just to people how much huge scale work with tireless effort and huge amount of money spent goes un-noticed due to zero media coverage of these passionate pakistanis.

These are countless pakistanis outside pakistan who contribute from $5 to $50000 and inside pakisan who contribute Rs 100 to Rs100000 to his organization to meet its expense which goes beyonnd millions of dollars.
There is Shaukat Khanam Cancer Hospital & Research Center.
The State of the art hospital in Pakistan. Built by people of Pakistan, each and every Pakistani contributed in its construction. Now its yearly budget has crossed Rs. 1 billion mark ( $12 million) for treatment of 70 % patient without any cost and 30% on their ability to pay as much as they can.
Who is paying all this money for more than a decade now ? The Pakistanis living inside and out of Pakistan.
There are unknown number of individuals and groups who spend large chunk of money , give away their belonging for people they dont know.

Saudi Arabia is top in the world with its citizen paying 15% of their national income in zakat and charity every year.

Not sure about Zakat, but there are people like Syed Babar Ali (of packages) and Razak Dawood (Descon) who dream, contribute, struggle and achieve projects like LUMS National Outreach Programme.
There are thousands others who contribute their intellect and time, if not money, for betterment of our society.

contrary to popular concept, I'd say many people in Paksitan DO NO PAY zakat warna aaj yee haal nahi hota.
Also on side note, I really dont approve the idea of Govt deducting Zakat from bank account/salary. Its should be person's own decision who he/she wants to pay Zakat. There might be some close relative who is eligible for Zakat.

First you talk about individual tycoons donating large amounts then you change tack and mention Edhi Saab who collects other people's money in millions and distributes it to poor without taking a charge. You see why this is very confusing? What is it you are saying?

Your assesment is partially right. State bank of Pakistan deduct Zakat from your bank accounts in all banks in Pakistan once a year on 1st Ramazan every year. There is not such deduction from your monthly salaries. I guess you mis took it for income tax, which is deducted every month from your salary, not zakat.
There is an easy way to block this deduction by filling a stamp paper and submit it at your bank. Many years ago it was only for one sect now it is open for all muslims.
Now where this Zakat money collected by SBP goes ? Earlier there was no proper use of this money , but now for many years there is a body named ‘Bait-ul-maal’. Poor and needy people can apply for monetary assistance by simply filling the bait-ul-mal form available at banks. attach copy of CNIC and submit it to thier office after attestation from regional officer. Baitul maal grants nominal monthly monetary assistance to people who apply for it. if they deserve it

Usually many people believe that these govt depts dont actually work. Which is not entirely correct. They work and they provide assistance to people in need. Just the basic requirement is to fill the form and submit it to thier office. Usually poor people dont know how to fill the form. They should get it filled from some one else and get some awareness.

Thread is not about Sacrifice its about ZAKAT and Paying of it (or not paying of it). ZAKAT is FARZ and its not a Sacrifice. Charity will come under Sacrifice tag.
