The Pager craze

Once upon a time, Pagers/Beepers were the ultimate gadget to have. I’m talking early to mid 90’s. When they first came out, everyone would want to get their hands on one of them as a symbol of cool and wanted.

When you had a fantasy, shmancy pager you thought you were the talk of school. You had the first pager with a see-through case on it, hence very “Bling Bling”. Then some months down the road, the Paging service companies started to offer a voicemail feature which totally blew the old timers out of water.

You would run to the home phone or pay phone to check your pager for any new voicemails. And often would be found with your pager flashing at your belt/around the waist for all to see. Much like Cellular phones today.

So…now that’s been made clear. Who among you felt that way when the pagers first came out? Did you have one? Do you STILL use one for personal use? :faizy:

Dont be shy…we’ve all been there; done that. Please share

Re: The Pager craze

well, thanks for positing the query, teggy.

luckily, i never had one and do not belive in having one.

normally, only doctors in hospitals have them as part of their every day life.
as cell phones are not technically supposed to be in the hopsitals.

normally, people who have other professions, dont need pagers.

it may have to do more with show off than actual utility of the gadget.

Re: The Pager craze

Helllooo! And where have youuuuuu been? How're you doing?

And yes, it's mostly hospitals that employ the use of Pagers even today. But i'm still curious to see if any member on here still use pagers (non-work related).

Re: The Pager craze

omg..pagersssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss

Re: The Pager craze

LOL.

I have never had any pager. I remember them being out and they were considered a very cool gadget but I did not get one. I got a cell phone.

Since I have nothing to share about pagers, I’ll share my experience with my first phone and the pricing plan

The first phone was about as long as my hand and it was HEAVY! All text, no images in the menu or settings etc. It was black and white text. The pricing plan was that there were no minutes free! You paid something like $0.19 per minute, however, the first minute was free. So, being true desis :jhanda: anytime family called, the phone used to beep at 50 seconds and we would go “call me back” and hang up :rotfl: They would call back and we would talk 50 seconds at a time.

We had to think twice before calling friends and most of the times we didn’t :whistling

Re: The Pager craze

i had like over 10 pagers...and i use to text people with special codes... like 143 .. 666. 707 etc. etc... hmmmmmmmmm god damm i miss da good old plain simple days

Re: The Pager craze

:hehe: Oh yeaaaa 143 :whistling: LOL. memories.

lol i feel ya Shikra! I got my first cell phone with Sprint, it was the cool-looking Motorola Timeport. The first of its kind i think…

:omg: Phone big as your hand and heavy as a brick..Wow! i just had this conversation with someone last week and we cracked up on it!

Re: The Pager craze

Do you guys know if companies still support pager communication?

Re: The Pager craze

I believe they do. I’ve seen people with cell phones and pagers. But most of them are work related. I don’t know anyone who still utilizes it for personal use.

I don’t know if you’ve seen this movie Dont be a menace… in there they have a scene where the two guys make fun of pager days. They’re standing in front of the liquor store and one of 'em pages the other one (they’re standing next to each other), so the dude that got paged, uses his old school cellphone (literally brick kind with a huge rubber antenna) and says “Yea! You paged me!” and the first dude goes “Yea, u ready to roll?” and they both hang up and walk away. :rotfl: you have to see it to know what i’m talking about.

Re: The Pager craze

Hmmmm…most companies/jobs provide cell phones for work, so not sure why people still carry pagers even for work. If they don’t want to give out their number, then they are killing their business in a way.

I wasn’t used to leaving numbers on pagers, so this one time I called this friend of mine and I put in my phone number. I accidentally entered a wrong digit as part of my number and then I pressed the “clear” button on the cell phone and completed my number. She never called me for a while, I paged her back and she called and I asked her why she didn’t call me earlier :mad2: She said your number had an extra digit and I wasn’t sure which one didn’t belong. I said but I cleared it  She said just because you cleared it from your cell phone’s screen, that doesn’t mean it erased it from my pager too. I was like ohhhhhhhhhh :whistling

Re: The Pager craze

haha. That's classic.

Re: The Pager craze

teggy. you're old. pagers are like uber-uncool now.

Re: The Pager craze

i still have one of the old pagers from 10 years lying around somewhere, Page Net i believe.

but thesedays the only people i see with pagers are doctors

Was that really necessary? :(

Re: The Pager craze

Pager is 100 year old technology , it was used in 20th century , now we are living in 21st century. Pagers are mentioned in the history books. Pagers are like typewriters, only found in pictures in the books , nobody owns one anymore.

its more like the iphone craze now! man pagers were a long time ago... they are like the dinosaurs of their time!

oh yes it was

Re: The Pager craze

teggy for all your on-call duties... pretty soon you'll be getting one. :D

Re: The Pager craze

I remember when me and my friends used to share 1 pager between the four of us (ahh miss the good old high school days) and we would get a buzz over sending swear words to random people. hehe
