The official GS Photography competition

Dear Guppies,

The official GS photo contest is now open.
All of us ocassionally post masterpieces in this section, which are by no means inferior to any photo shot by a NG professional photographer. :smooth:

So to really tap our shooting potential
(an old saying .. There is a photographer hidden inside every guppy ) :stuck_out_tongue:

We are going to have a photography competition, right here on GS.
The guppies will contest in 5 different categories.

  1. Nature
Sunrise, Sunset, Landscape,Mountains,Lakes,Snow,Rain whatever inspires you

  2. My Neighborhood
Show us your community, your local mosque, your local street, playground …

  3. Kids
This will be the real fun part … :cb:

  4. Candid Camera
Those everyday events that are priceless… and are preserved for eternity

  5. Random category
(post any pic here that doesnt fall into the above categories, but you would like to submit it for any reason)

Each guppy may submit a maximum of 2 snaps in each category. All the submitted photos will be graded by the guppies themselves. You may cast one vote in each category AFTER the deadline for submission.

The photo submission and the Voting guidelines as well as deadlines will be announced by our respected and honorable Mods of the Image section, i.e. Gizzy, CB and DesiMunda.

So hang on tite - Grab ur camera - go out and Shoot

Enjoy and have fun.

update

Ok, here’s the final plan.

Since it is not possible to have an automatic voting system here in the forums. So I have created a special gallery here:

http://www.paklinks.com/gs/gallery/browseimages.php?c=71&userid=

It will be easier to submit your votes there. It will not be possible to post multiple votes, since they will be visible to everyone.

I will upload the already posted pictures in the gallery section.
But from now on, you guys post the pictures not here anymore, but in the appropriate gallery.

In the end just a few set of rules in addition to the one’s already posted above and some requirements from the GS photpgraphers

Photo contest rules: :rule:

  1. Each guppy may submit a mainimum of 2 snaps in each category.
  2. The pictures are not allowed to be edited in anyway (this is not a photoshop contest !!! you can use filters instead - see rule# 5)
  3. You can adjust brightness and contrast if needed.
  4. You must provide technical some data about the camera you took the picture with. (make/model/ type/lens, etc)
  5. You can use any kind of equipment you like, also the use of filters is allowed of course. [as long as you dont do any magic on the PC, its fine]
  6. If possible also mention what exposure values you used? (aperture and shutter speeds)
  7. All the submitted photos will be graded by the guppies themselves.
*]You may cast one vote in each category AFTER the deadline for submission.

This is the Highway 403 facing east, right under Mississauga Road. Picture is three months old now and the construction is all over and done with. We now have a neat little HOV (high occupancy vehicle) lane added to the highway.

Frozen lake sunset, you can see the ice fishing going on in the background, close to Lake simcoe, ontario, canada,

Re: The official GS Photography competition

When is the deadline?

Can they be pictures we've taken prior to having knowledge about this contest?

Captain Lota - What shutter speed did you use? Must've been really slow.

[edit]I'd like to request a new category: Animals

I have a few pictures of animals (fish, birds, bumblebees, ducks, bakras :D etc.). I'm sure lots of other contestants do as well.

Re: The official GS Photography competition

15 seconds, Ms Phatima1.

Captain Lota

Re: The official GS Photography competition

So you used a tripod?

I have a question, relating to this (somewhat). I took my tripod and set it up on the roof on the Fourth of July to take pictures of the fireworks. I set it to the "night mode" (it slows down the shutter speed for more time to capture the light, I guess). Well, then I realized that the fireworks would go down as the picture was still being captured, so they wouldn't look like actualy fireworks in the picture (just a bunch of lines of light). How do people take pictures of the fireworks without this happening?

Re: The official GS Photography competition

No not a tripod but i could have used one. Just rested the camera on the railing of the bridge.

For night time shooting you need to bring in more light into the camera for a decent picture. For that you can either a. Slow down the shutter speed, or b. Increase the aperture (gateway that lets light in) of the lens to let more light in (just like the iris in your eye increases in size in the dark to allow more light in).

Slowing down the shutter speed is not an option since like you said the fireworks would come down as colourful lines. Infact since fireworks are moving objects, shutter speed should be pretty fast. Your only option is to increase the aperture size. Most basic cameras have auto settings and dont allow you to change these settings. The lower the aperture rating the bigger the aperture size. My camera has a lowest aperture rating of f=2.6 (which is pretty ordinary). Good cameras can go down to f=1.0 (means big big aperture = lots of incoming light).

For fireworks at night the ideal settings would be: Fast shutter speed (T=1/250), low aperture rating (around f=2.0) and a high film speed (ISO 400).

Sincerely,
Captain Lota

Re: The official GS Photography competition

Ah thanks. Very helpful :)

Re: The official GS Photography competition

when does it end?

Re: The official GS Photography competition

I have asked the mods to provide a BOX, with different slots according to categories where we can drop the pics. They are also going to announce the deadlines and voting methods etc.

Please be patient. With all those recent problems with GS, the mods and admin team is really very busy and I am sure they will participate here as soon as they get the important things done, which are on the top of the priority list

And YES, phatti thats a great idea, we can add a category for animals, but they have to be SHOT from your camera by YOU , please dont scan or cut paste anything :hehe:

Thanks everyone

Re: The official GS Photography competition

what category does Lotas fall under?

sincerely yours,
Ms. Captain Loti

Re: The official GS Photography competition

**
You should post some candid camera pics** ;)

Re: The official GS Photography competition

James_Bhaand, thanks. Can we atleast crop some pictures, if the alignment is a bit off or something?

Re: The official GS Photography competition

Ok, so the attached picture was a candid shot I took last year and would qualify for the 'Nature' category in this competition.

It has already been posted in the 'Travel' section on Gupshup but it is still one of my favorites.......
