The Obesity Epidemic- Why are we getting fatter?

Re: The Obesity Epidemic- Why are we getting fatter?

Interestingly enough, Kuwait is one of the richest countries (i think 4th richest country) and also on top in obesity.
In UK, obesity is common in lower and lower working class.

Re: The Obesity Epidemic- Why are we getting fatter?

Paklinks is an online community in which participants discuss various life and social issues

this is what is written here

http://www.paklinks.com/gs/all-views/362177-general-posting-guidelines.html

it does not say discuss pakistan related social issues only

Re: The Obesity Epidemic- Why are we getting fatter?

Cheryl Cole is relevant to Pakistani folks , she is unkay khawaboon key shahzadi. Poor and hungry folks have the right to dream , at least.

Do you really trust an article from JPMA ? I do not trust any survey or any study conducted by anyone belonging to a third world country, they have their own vested interests in those studies and surveys and they can twist it to fit their agenda.

Yes you did in post # 15.

Re: The Obesity Epidemic- Why are we getting fatter?

I said...the epidemic started in UK and USA and now seems to be a global issue.

I didnt say the globe consisted of only the USA and UK.

Re: The Obesity Epidemic- Why are we getting fatter?

Where did I say do not discuss , I said please do not discuss , it is Pakistani community , if you discuss obesity plague in USA , UK it is insult of Pakistani folks who do not have enough to eat. That is all , internet is funny country , you can do whatever you want.

Re: The Obesity Epidemic- Why are we getting fatter?

I trust them more than I trust you on this topic :)

Re: The Obesity Epidemic- Why are we getting fatter?

I am not saying anything on this topic as it is not relevant to Poor and malnourished folks of Pakistan.

Re: The Obesity Epidemic- Why are we getting fatter?

I think Mirch uncle is having a bad day. This is a Pakistani forum but in no way is it limited to Pakistani issues only. Many of us including Mirch live outside of Pakistan. Genetically speaking Pakistani's have a far greater chance of being overwt or obese.

I agree with most of what has been said. A big thing is convenience and ready made food is convenient. It is also a lot cheaper to go to McDonalds than buy fresh produce and cook at home in terms of money and time. Along with lack of physical activity makes this a greater problem.

Inspiron said the government should ban or deter super-sizing and I am not sure they can prevent that. BUT there are measure being taken eg. taking vending machines out of schools and having healthier lunches at the school cafeterias. Many younger kids are not allowed to bring unhealthy snacks or lunches either. I think parents have a huge role to play here and that is teach healthy lifestyle by example.

Re: The Obesity Epidemic- Why are we getting fatter?

This morning I stopped at a Bojangles to buy my daughter breakfast , she did not have time to eat breakfast at home because of an early appointment with her pediatrician , I saw a family of 8 who were all motay/morbidly obese and they were having their go at big portions of those fried chickens. :@:.
People do not have control over their urges and cravings that is another reason of this obesity epedemic.

Re: The Obesity Epidemic- Why are we getting fatter?

one nation can have two problems at the same time, and especially in a country like Pakistan with the divide between rich and poor and that is exactly what the report had noted. The rate of cardiovascular disease due to obesity and overweight issues has gone up significantly.

yes it is not relevant to the poor and malnourished folks of Pakistan, but it is relevant to the obese and overweight population with high incidence of diabetes and heart disease.

some more info, a different source

A new World Bank report warns that South Asian countries are facing a health crisis with rising rates of heart disease, diabetes, obesity, and other noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), which disproportionately affect poor families, with possible side effects of disability and premature death, and worsening poverty as people pay for medical treatment out of their own pockets.

According to the new report―Capitalizing on the Demographic Transition: Tackling Noncommunicable Diseases in South Asia―heart disease in the region is now the leading cause of death in adults aged 15-69, and South Asians suffer their first heart attacks six years earlier than other groups worldwide.

A recent study of 52 countries from all over the world, including Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka, found that South Asians were six years younger (53 vs. 59 years) than those in the rest of the world at their first heart attack and had high levels of risk factors, such as diabetes and high lipids and low levels of physical activity and healthy dietary habits.

Re: The Obesity Epidemic- Why are we getting fatter?

Becausee..

ready made meals are easy - just stick in the oven
people come back from work tired and hungry, and it's so much easy to have a ready made meal / order a take away
healthier food such as fresh produce is more expensive
advertising of unhealthy food (e.g. chocolate) as: a treat, a luxury, go on you deserve it etc kind of thing
wider availability of unhealthy food e.g. vending machines in schools
office jobs require sitting on your bum all day
watching TV, being on the laptop etc requires sitting on your bum
huge reliance on the car to get from point A to B
the notion of exercise is associated with going to a gym, which is costly. People don't realise exercise can be as simple as going up stairs rather than lifts
huge surplus of food in developed countries (how much food goes to waste in the UK is ridiculous)
kids prefer gaming on Wiis, computers etc than playing outdoors
people are scared of letting their kids play outdoors - safety concerns
the rise in processed foods e.g. crisps, cereals etc - often with very high salt content
people don't have time to make breakfast/lunch on a work day so will often buy something packaged instead

Re: The Obesity Epidemic- Why are we getting fatter?

All valid points especially the supermarkets who send 1000's of tons of out of date food to the waste tips each day when there are a 100000 homeless in the UK alone. Add in all that processed food, lack of exercise and all the cheap alcohol that the non muslims drink and it's a recipe for obesity .

Re: The Obesity Epidemic- Why are we getting fatter?

Have you seen the house of commons? I'm surprised it does not sink into the river Thames with all those fat greedy politicians crammed in :D
