The Northern Lights appear in an atmospheric layer high above the surface of the earth, and can be seen during dark hours in the northern hemisphere. (Norway’s geographic location offers prolly the best views.)
The light is emitted when solar charged particles are guided by the earth’s magnetic field into the atmosphere near the poles. When comin’ into contact with O2 and N2 molecules at 'bout 100km or so, a part of the energy of the collisions transforms to visible light. and..Voila!
