In Europe it will be available from March 2005 and I’m honestly thinking about getting it. I like its design and the previous Passat models have always been reliable and good quality cars.
Starting from the 2001 model, VW reliability is getting questionable - they fare poorly in customer satisfaction surveys in the UK due to mechanical and electrical problems.
Then again, I guess in Austria VW maintainance is cheap compared to the UK (what with the Germans efficiently breathing over the border :p ) so go for it. VW Passat's are reknowned for their excellent interiors and good build quality (no squeaks or cheap materials)

I agree, they just forgot how to make automatic transmission. Golf and Jetta are horrible in last 2-3 years. Lotsa complaints.
Generally european cars are popular for elctronic failures. Even if you look at the new BMWs, they have lots of issues with electronic gadgets going bad. Usually the repairs are expensive. But they all have great ride quality, comfort and design.

I don't know about automatic transmission... but their Tiptronic is designed by Porsche and is one of the best. Drove one for 2 years. Not a single complaint.
By the way Jettas and Golf are made in the plant in Mexico (I believe) and their build quality is not top-class... but to the best of my knowledge, Passat, Toureg and Phaeton are still made in Germany, so they should be ok. Getting a Passat means you get a cheaper Audi. Interior is fantastic. Engine is good and the quality of materials is top-notch.
Can you Europeans tell me one thing - Do GPS systems work over there? I am told that the GPS technology works everywhere, except in foggy conditions. True/False/Complete BS?

My GPS seems to get me to within 3 meters of places I program into it, so I have a nagging suspicion that it works here. It might be something to do with the "G" for "Global" in GPS (Global Positioning System)

I was asking more in terms of fog issue. Once upon a time, London used to be pretty foggy. So wondering if GPS systems work under foggy conditions.

It works in all weather conditions. The one thing I find is that getting a satellite lock with thick cloud cover, including fog, it takes a lot more time to get the lock and loses it occasionally.
Then again, I just have a PDA-style GPS system with a small integrated antenna that is weak. I'm sure a dedicated built in car GPS system would have a stronger receiver with it.

i am assuming you are referring to a navigation system. i used one when i was in germany. it was dead accurate and i loveeed it. it was integrated with the dvd player in the car and was from becker or alpine. i don't think the functionality of nav systems depend on weather. atleast i did not have any problems during winters in germany.
it is on my buy list and i will get it for my car when i have the money.
