Odumbe to play against Pakistan ‘A’

NAIROBI, July 30: Kenyan cricket coach Andy Moles has included veteran Maurice Odumbe in the squad to play the opening three-dayer against Pakistan ‘A’ at the Nairobi’s Simba Union club on Saturday.

Odumbe is currently the subject of an International Cricket Council (ICC) tribunal hearing into allegations of receiving money from a Indian bookmaker. “He will definitely play for us this weekend,” Moles said at the team’s training ground.

Despite the distraction of his case, Odumbe played a pivotal role in Kenya’s victory over Uganda in the ICC Intercontinental Cup last Sunday, taking three wickets on the final day of the three-day game. Moles said he expected tough opposition from the Pakistani team led by Test batsman Misbahul Haq. -AFP

Umar’s ton lifts Pakistan A against Kenya

NAIROBI: Opener Taufeeq Umar hit a century to give Pakistan A a flying start in their three-day game against Kenya at the Nairobi Simba Union Club on Saturday.

The left-hander scored an impressive 144 runs off 176 balls to consolidate the Pakistani innings after winning the toss. Pakistan were 352 for four after 90 overs. The absence of all-rounder Maurice Odumbe in the match meant that the Kenyan bowlers struggled against a strong Pakistan outfit, which included some of the country’s Test players.

Odumbe said he was not in the right state of mind to play the opening game after attending a drawn-out inquiry into allegations that he received payments from an Indian bookmaker in 2002.

Skipper Steve Tikolo was forced to bowl all day and his efforts were rewarded when he removed Umar leg before and Pakistani captain Misbah Ul Haq for 22. Faisal Iqbal, who partnered Umar in a sparkling fourth-wicket partnership of 161 runs, was 90 not out, while Naveed Latif was on 32 at the end of the first day.

Shah and Tikolo boost Kenya against Pakistan A

NAIROBI: Opener Ravindu Shah and skipper Steve Tikolo both hit centuries as Kenya reached 264 for 3 in reply to Pakistan A’s 495-7 declared on the second day of their three day match at the Nairobi Simba Union Club on Sunday.

The hosts are 231 runs behind going into the final day. Kenya made a shaky start to their reply after they lost two early wickets when Kennedy Obuya went in the first over and Hitesh Modi was clean bowled by Junaid Zia. But Shah, ably assisted by Tikolo, steadied the innings to push Kenya’s score to a respectable 264 for 3 in 56 overs before fading light forced a premature end to the day’s action.

Shah battled well with a flurry of boundaries and rallied to make 124 before Raiz Afridi, who had bowled Obuya for two, returned to rip the Kenyan top order. Tikolo remained unbeaten on 104, while Thomas Odoyo (8) was not out at the close of play. afp

Kenya 196 for 8 (Odumbe 64*) beat Pakistan A 194 (Qaiser 69*) by 2 runs
Scorecard

Kenya posted a thrilling two-run win over Pakistan A in the first match of the triangular series at the Sir Ali Muslim Club Ground in Nairobi. Chasing 197 for victory, Pakistan were in a deep hole, at 151 for 6 with just five overs to go. Qaiser Abbas then smashed 21 off the penultimate over to give Kenya a huge scare, but with nine needed off the last over, Pakistan A lost three wickets in successive balls and fell just two runs short.

Earlier in the day, persistent drizzle had seen the match reduced to a 35-over contest. After sending Kenya in, the Pakistanis made full use of the overcast conditions and ripped through the top order. Ravindu Shah was the first man out, falling to a brilliant one-handed catch by Kamran Akmal behind the stumps.

The other opener, Kennedy Obuya, opened his account with a crisp boundary but was kept in check by the pace of Rao Iftikhar Anjum at the other end. He eventually edged one to the slips where Taufeeq Umar snapped up a smart low catch.

Maurice Odumbe rescued the situation with a composed 64 and took Kenya to 196. Though it wasn’t a formidable total, it proved just enough. Qaiser, who nearly took the Pakistanis home with some big hits, was declared the Man of the Match.

Misbah-ul-Haq and Afridi bail out Pakistan A

Pakistan A 216 for 6 (Afridi 66, Misbah 64*) beat Kenya 215 (Modi 69, Ravindu 58) by 4 wickets

After a blazing start to the tournament, when they won two matches in a row, Kenya slumped to their second successive defeat, going down by four wickets to Pakistan A in Nairobi. Batting first, Kenya managed only 215, but that seemed enough as Pakistan A slipped to 82 for 5. However, a 109-run stand between Misbah-ul-Haq (64 not out) and Riaz Afridi (66) rescued the innings and gave them their first win of the tournament.

The Kenyan innings got off to a wobbly start when Kennedy Obuya was caught behind off Iftikhar Anjum for a duck (3 for 1), but Ravindu Shah and Hitesh Modi put Kenya in the ascendancy with a 127-run partnership. Modi survived one chance, when he was dropped on 14 by Junaid Zia at third man, but he refused to allow the let-off to affect him, going for his strokes and running hard between the wickets.

At 131 for 1 in the 29th over, Kenya were in charge, but things turned sour soon after, as Ravindu was caught in the covers off Qaiser Abbas for 58, and Steve Tikolo was bowled by Mansoor Amjad for a duck. Modi was then bowled by Naved Latif for 69, and though Thomas Odoyo resisted, making an unbeaten 39, Kenya could only manage 215.

That looked like a winning total, as Odoyo and Martin Suji reduced Pakistan A to 36 for 4 by the 11th over. Latif and Misbah steadied the innings somewhat, but when Latif was trapped in front by Lameck Onyango for 38, Kenya were in sight of a second consecutive win against Pakistan A.

Then came the matchwinning partnership between Afridi and Misbah. The Kenyans did have one chance to break the stand, but Onyango dropped Afridi at long-off. Afridi was finally bowled by Ongondo for 66, but Misbah ensured that Pakistan A got to their target without further alarms.

India A trounce Kenya despite Shah’s efforts

Wisden Cricinfo staff

August 18, 2004

India A 217 for 4 (Jadhav 76) beat Kenya 216 (Shah 90, Sriram 4-49) by 6 wickets

Despite Ravindu Shah’s entertaining 90, Kenya suffered a six-wicket defeat against India A at the Gymkhana Club Ground in Nairobi. This was Kenya’s third loss in as many matches and their hopes of entering the final now hinge on their final league game against Pakistan A on Friday.

Kenya made a fine start to their innings after opting to bat, with Kennedy Otieno and Shah racing along at a healthy pace. Even after Otieno fell, sweeping uppishly to square leg, Hitesh Modi filled in responsibly and along with Shah took the score to 153 for 1.

But the Indian spinners put the brakes after the 35th over and none of the batsmen provided the final kick. The last seven batsmen contributed just 21 between them and Sridharan Sriram finished with four wickets with his part-time left-arm spin. Ramesh Powar, the offspinner, joined in the act, snared three wickets to help keep Kenya down to just 216.

Deeraj Jadhav, the Maharashtra opener who was the highest scorer in the Ranji Trophy last season, piloted the chase with a composed 76. The rest of the top-order batsmen chipped in with vital contributions and India A coasted home with more than ten overs to spare. Sriram’s plucky 35, off 30 balls, along with his bowling exploits, won him the Man-of-the-Match award.

Dhoni downs Pakistan A

Wisden Cricinfo staff

August 19, 2004

India A 236 for 2 (Dhoni 119*) beat Pakistan 234 (Misbah 106) by eight wickets

Mahendra Dhoni’s superb unbeaten 119 carried India A to victory over their Pakistani counterparts, in the eighth match of the ongoing tournament in Nairobi.

After winning the toss and batting first, Pakistan were bowled out for 234 with more than three overs remaining, despite a century for the captain, Misbah-ul-Haq, and 87 for Bazid Khan.

The pair added 189 for the third wicket, after Amit Bhandari had ripped out both openers, but when Khan was run out, the innings subsided dramatically. Shib Paul and Sairaj Bahutule grabbed three wickets each, as Pakistan’s last seven wickets tumbled for eight runs in four overs.

Despite Dheeraj Jadhav’s second-ball run-out, the momentum was all with India, and Dhoni allowed Pakistan no way back. He added 169 for the second wicket with Gautam Gambhir (79), before Sridharan Sriram joined him to wrap up the proceedings.
