The mythical middle ground

One often hears this on these forums, especially when it comes to something the Taleban have done that is indefensible even for those disposed to defend them. That we are on the middle ground, there is a shade of gray somewhere, that one needs to look at things in broader perspective, that the drone attacks are bad too, that why dont we look at things like honour killings in Karachi, arent those bad?

Folks, it is difficult to overcome years of conditioning to automatically feel positive towards people who oppose, atleast claim to oppose, the interests of the americans or the western powers. Yet we cannot tolerate every brand of filth in the name of doing so.

It is difficult to oppose Muslims at a time when Muslims are opposed by atleast some policies of western countries and people. Yet we cannot allow fail to effectively and loudly oppose vicious ignorance and murder for that reason.

If you really held the middle ground, you would not feel the urge to condemn all the other things you dont like in the same breath as you condemned the Taleban. If you really didnt like the Taleban, your opposition to them would not be tied to your opposition to drone attacks or the war on terror or cluster bombs or the Israel Palestine problem or Salman Rushdie or the Danish cartoons or ihateislam.com.

When it comes to innocents being killed, there is no shade of gray except as a means of obfuscation.

So go ahead and discuss honour killings in Karachi, civilian deaths from drone attacks, war on terror etc. But please dont use them as crutches to avoid properly condemning and distancing yourselves from the animals running amok in our country.

Re: The mythical middle ground

It is not that simple. Jehadi culture was founded by Zia after kicking democratic secular government. After Zai’s violent death, some how this culture was continued to be nourished during 9 years of Mush. Mush has left so much this jihadi garbage with the help of ISI, it can not be cleared unless people start to come out of their palaces (which they are never safe in present circumstances) and start a long march against jehadis to show them that how much majority of people hate them due to their ideology.

However this is not going to happen. People particularly from Punjab will be reluctant or defiant to lead such long march against its own military supporting jehadis like Haqqani. This kind of garbage will continue. It suits army, because of the aid pouring from uncle Sam in the name of war on terror and as usual upper hand in the government.:)

Re: The mythical middle ground

Middle ground is where you go to get stoned to death by taliban.

Re: The mythical middle ground

zia died in august 1988
Musharraf took over in October 1999

Doesnt matter what the source is or who created what. Thats an endless argument that I'd rather not go into.

There is definitely a deficit in our expression of opposition to these people. And that is partially because of these easy mental refuges that are available, such as ostensibly taking a 'middle ground'.

I dont know if it suits the army for them to lose the monopoly they enjoy over this country.
