The most wonderful iftaari experience.

A few weeks ago, at a Pakistani get-together I met a young South African lady who’s married to a former Pakistani cricketer. She was very insistent that I take her number and come to her house whenever I please, especially during ramzaan. A few days ago she gave me a call, and left a message, the next day she even sent me an sms saying I should come over for iftaari whenever I want to. I decided not to be rude and gave her a call, asking if Saturday would be alright.

So this evening, I went over to her house, expecting just a few other people to be there, but her entire family and extended family were there, and I was the only odd one out. But I had such an amazing time, everyone made me feel so welcome, the uncles and aunties and cousins were all so friendly, curious to know who I was, since they all knew each other and I was the only stranger.

I cannot even begin to start mentioning the food. Every family member that came in, brought in 2-3 platters of goodies. I think they set the table 3-4 times. In-between the men went for maghrib, came back for dinner, then went for taraweeh and came back for dessert and tea. There were constantly drinks being served and chai was served twice. The lady of the house never sat down.

There were kids running about, young girls chattering away…the whole house was so noisy and there was so much barkat Alhamdullilah. I really really had such a wonderful time being around such loving and generous people. I met a few new friends, swapped phone numbers and I have a few more iftaari invites yay hehe.

SOunds absolutely wonderful :k:

Though it makes me curious.. what are some tyical south African dishes?

Well these people were of Gujerati origin. But South African Muslim women are renowned master bakers. Over the years they have perfected the art of amazing savouries, such as pies, samosay, cakes, biscuits, they make everything from scratch. Their main meals are more simple in comparison to Pakistani cooking however. Like today, the iftaar table and the dessert table were twice as long as the one of the main meal. South Africans really live to eat!

saanu te koi nayee puchda… :grumpy:
