The most overhyped food

There are some food spots that are known to be pretty famous but for locals, they can be kind of so-so, and not worth the long lines and hype.

For me it’s the famous halal cart gyro on 53rd street/6th avenue in NYC. It’s not bad, but I’ve had much better.

What famous food do you think is overrated in your city?

Re: The most overhyped food

Agree w/ you on the halal cart guys.

I wonder if the wait of 2-3 hrs plus in the early morning to have a cronut (croissant/donut hybrid) is worth the hype.

Re: The most overhyped food

^Agree, lol. Went to NY for the first time (apart from the airport) for a few days and I really wanted to try the pizza as the state’s famous for it. But my dad insisted on the renowned halal cart gyro. There was a long wait…and I thought it was just…average. I’ve had better…didn’t see what the hype was about.

Sushi. So much hype about it…and when I tried it, it was just okay. I don’t like the texture.

Re: The most overhyped food

I heard that you can still get them at 10 AM on a Monday morning. I had some at the San gennaro feast, they were pretty good (not the original but who cares). I’ll try and let you know :balley:

any particular pizzeria or just NY-style pizza?
There’s a pizzeria not too far from me that’s supposed to be really famous…long lines as well, and $5 a slice (compared to teh avg $2)…had it…not bad but not worth the price.

Re: The most overhyped food

Paye- I don’t get why people get so excited about the dish, to me it’s just like having any other meat salan.

Re: The most overhyped food

I also think the New York Halal cart is over rated. From all the descriptions and rave reviews I was expecting something amazing.

Im not from Chicago, but everyone is always raving about Usmania and Khan BBQ. I thought both places were average at best.

In Lahore, there is a restaurant called Village, also always gets amazing reviews from everyone. I just wasnt that amazed with it :frowning:

Re: The most overhyped food

Village and Ziafat are over rated in Lahore they just suck too much

Re: The most overhyped food

For the NY’ers…I didn’t like the gyro cart at alllllllllllll…we were visiting some family out there a few years ago and they made such a hoo-haa about it. We went and…utter fail. Nothing like I thought it would be.

As for Usmania and Khan BBQ…they’re NOT all that!!! I don’t really like Usmania at all…I think the reason why its famous is because its one of the few places that looks nice on Devon. Kinda like Sabri and Serena. The food isn’t amazing at all…its just the atmosphere.

Khan BBQ I like but only certain things off the menu…not all of what they make is amazing so you have to know what to order.

So far, my favorite desi on Devon is Anmol and Khan BBQ. I’ve also heard good things about Clifton but haven’t tried it yet.

Tahoora is over rated on Devon - everything is dripping in oil!

Re: The most overhyped food

Lobster … tastes like cotton wool to me … euuugh
I thought The NY gyro was sooo yummmmmmm … def not average :bummer: maybe I havent had a really good gyro then :hmmm:
the village restaurant in lhr pk and bundu …
Ive had the original original bundu and THAT really was exceptional but not so the new/current bundu
chicago deep dish … really dont see why its famous/popular
KFC .. found a halal place in texas … and was truly not impressed

Re: The most overhyped food

is anmol any good? i have head good things abt it…but never tried it

ussmania used to be good especially their matka ghost…lost its touch now

tahoora…ahhh no comments

Re: The most overhyped food

When I visited anmol 4 years back, it wasn’t all that great. I love Sabri on Devon, they have never disappointed.

Re: The most overhyped food

Shrimps. I feel like I’m eating an insect. Ew
Nihari. Makes me want to puke now.

Re: The most overhyped food

I find anmol a bit better than the usual usmania’s and such.

Sabri has good chicken makhni…certain dishes are good there for sure.

Re: The most overhyped food

My friends recommended Hyderabad House on Devon for the biryani, but it was sooo ordinary. It killed my craving for biryani for sure!

Ziafat :hehe:
They serve chicken pulao when you ask for biryani.

Re: The most overhyped food
