I used to feel bad about how hard my mother worked when she was alive. She studied hard to be a nurse to provide for her family. Then when she migrated to Canada, she went back to school and studied again to learn a new trade with which she contributed to the family income. It was considered “necessary” because if she didn’t then how was my father going to support the family back home as well as provide for his family here? So yes, it was not by choice that she worked.

Now I see the fruits of her labor. Not only did she instill in me a sense of dignity, integrity and confidence, she impacted so, so many other lives. I see my phupho’s families and their children and I know what they will never know.

Now I am no longer sad for the hard life that she lived. I am proud of her. And I am relieved that Allah swt will count all of the money that she earned and spent on others as sadaqa. I am more at peace with her loss knowing that she has likely earned herself a comfortable existence in the hereafter, insha Allah.

Ameen, may Allah reward her in the next life.

As a working mother it’s nice to know that all our hard work will be rewarded even when we can only see the now.
