The MMR AND POLIO

The MMR and polio is given in uk too, the MMR GIVEN at 12months, she hastn had MMR YET, but she has one dose of what the MMR is here in pak, her next dose is in sep,for some reason i prefer her getting it done back home, so in oct shel be 12month anyway, shall i get the mmr done there, even with one dose already given here.

plus here the give polio drop every month, but she had the polio injection in uk at birth…does she still need it here…the drops that is?

CONFUSED. and no one here knows anything.

sorry if this is similar to another thread..

thanks

Re: The MMR AND POLIO

Do you have all her medical records with you? Have you shown it to the doctor in Pak? Have you discussed it with her doctor in Pak?

Re: The MMR AND POLIO

I live in the US.They give the first MMR dose at 1 year of age.
I took my 6 month old to Pakistan and the doctor wanted to give my daughter a dose of MMR (or the measles monovalent vaccine,if available) to protect against measles which is prevalent in Pakistan.Although she did get a dose of MMR at 6 months, she got her MMR at 1 year as well and that was considered as the 'first vaccine' and the one given at 6 months was not counted amongst the regular vaccination.
MMR is given at 9 months in Pakistan as a routine.
Take your vaccination records with you when you go back. Her pediatrician there will be able to guide you accordingly, even if you are not getting answers right now.
As of polio drops,I have no idea why they are giving it monthly...acc to my knowledge that is not the usual practice in Pakistan.

Re: The MMR AND POLIO

and I though the first dose of MMR is given anytime between 12-15 months and the second dose is not given until probably before they start kindergarten at 5!!

and no I dont have any medical background.. I do check the immunization records for camps and thats the norm here..I havent seen manyc hildren under 5 with two doses of MMR.. usually it's just one!

Re: The MMR AND POLIO

^^Yes you are right...That is how it is done.
In Pakistan they just give the first dose a lil bit earlier than they give it here. And if a child receives a dose of MMR before 12 months of age (like my daughter did because of the circumstances) that is not recorded as the first dose of MMR.The child will still be getting 2 doses, one at 12-15 mths and then the other around 4-6 years.MMR can never be given to a child younger than 6 months....if the age is between 6-12 months, and the circumstances want,a dose of MMR vaccine or the measles monovalent vaccine can be given because measles is the most likely thing protection is needed for...(like I mentioned it is prevalent in Pakistan).
The OP can therefore discuss this with her doctor back in UK,if they want to consider the MMR her daughter had in Pakistan as the first dose or not.

Re: The MMR AND POLIO

But the polio issue needs to be addressed. I hope you are talking to your doctor and giving her/him your daughter's complete medical record before giving polio drops after already giving the polio vaccine.

Re: The MMR AND POLIO

^^yup...I wonder why are they giving it every month...?

Re: The MMR AND POLIO

I dont think her daughter is getting poli drops every month.. Is it very much possible that they send out teams every month trying to catch everyone in case they were missed? of course just assuming here!!

Pakistan is one of the five countries that still have polio in there.. so probably WHO is on a mission to eradicate polio like they did for smallpox!!!

Re: The MMR AND POLIO

Yes...I think you are right.
I remember those mobile teams going door to door and asking if the households had any kids who needed polio drops. That might be the case. They might be coming to her place every month, but not necessarily giving out the vaccine every time.

Re: The MMR AND POLIO

You are correct in regards to the MMR schedule. As far asIPV (Inactivated Polio vaccination) Injections go - the course should be at 2 months, 4 months, 6 months, 4 yrs/5 yrs.

OPV - oral polio vaccination is not routine in the US anymore. Over seas though it still is. Typically 1 dose (which is about 2 drops) can provide immunity against 3 strains of Polio in about 50% individuals. However, it is recommended for 3 doses, to reach about 95% immunity. This typically also at 2m, 4m, 6 months being the last dose.
-- One thing about the Oral Live attenuated drops- the virus can be shed in stool for about 6 weeks. Thus if you have family members that are immunocompromised (cancer therapy, hiv therapy, steroid therapy, etc), they should take care to not change the infants diapers...

Hope this helps... it's what I tell my patients :D

Re: The MMR AND POLIO

talk to a Dr instead of asking around.
