The Manner of Drinking

The Manner of Drinking of The Holy Prophet Sallalaahu Alaihi Wasallam

  1. The Holy Prophet Sallalaahu Alaihi Wasallam used to drink while sitting down, in three breaths (sips). Each time he put the cup to his blessed lips, he would say “Bismillah”, and each time he took it away, he would say “Alhamdulillah”, and on the third time he would add “Wash-shukrillah”.

  2. The Holy Prophet Sallalaahu Alaihi Wasallam drank Zam Zam water whilst standing up.

  3. When The Holy Prophet Sallalaahu Alaihi Wasallam drank water, he would sip it silently. He never drank in loud gulps.

  4. The Holy Prophet Sallalaahu Alaihi Wasallam was very fond of clear sweet water.

  5. Of all the Ummahaatul Mu’mineen, The Holy Prophet Sallalaahu Alaihi Wasallam was especially fond of Hazrat Ayesha Radhiallahu Anhu, and he liked to drink from the same cup and to place his blessed lips to the same part of the cup that she had drunk from.

  6. Of all liquids, The Holy Prophet Sallalaahu Alaihi Wasallam used to like milk the most.

  7. Sometimes The Holy Prophet Sallalaahu Alaihi Wasallam would drink milk on its own or would sometimes add cold water to it.

  8. Sometimes The Holy Prophet Sallalaahu Alaihi Wasallam would drink water directly from a water skin or bucket.

  9. Whenever The Holy Prophet Sallalaahu Alaihi Wasallam had any drink served in a majlis, he would instruct that the guests be served in order of age, starting with the eldest.

  10. When any drink was being served in a gathering, then whenever the jug returned for refilling The Holy Prophet Sallalaahu Alaihi Wasallam would ensure that the round carried on from the person where they had left off.

  11. When The Holy Prophet Sallalaahu Alaihi Wasallam served any drink to his guest, he himself would only drink after everyone else had been served. He said that the one who serves the drink should drink last.
