The Long Term Veiw?

No I am not discussing macroeconomics. What I mean is the idea most people have for instant gratification. Like so many people expected the nuke to somehow make Pakistani more technologically sound. Or the recent economic changes made by the administration are already under fire for not giving positive outcomes. Or the educational sector which is suddenly expected to make things all nice and rosy.

As individuals, do you all think always in the short term or have you also considered the long term in the sense that “it would not make any change for me but it may help a generation or two down the road”. I look at most political and social changes and wonder whether I should be thinking of how that would provide some benefit to me right away or fairly soon or should I be thinking whats best for my children?

This is an offshoot from the ITT thread where people have used the ITT institutes to head off to the US but in the end I think there has been a significant change back home as well, once these people start establishing business/connections back home. In the short term for the Indian government or for these people theres no motivation to keep subsidizing people to head off to the US but in the longer term it does provide benefits. So do you ever think of your decisions and how they would make positive changes a generation down or are you always thinking of how they affect you?

by ITT do you mean IIT?

Once a person gets rich, he can start thinking of future generations and leaving a legacy. Until then, people like me just want to become personally successful and stable. So I guess it depends on your age - I am in my 20s so my focus is on establishing myself first and paying off my student loans. Selfish? Maybe.

Yes thanks for correcting. I must have been thinking some other acronyms. :)

do both go together or is one the cause of the other? And un-fulfilled in the short or the long term?

i usually tend to think of the immediate short term in academic/ career matters :bummer: but i think its wiser to have a healthy balance between the two approaches… :k:
