The Influence Of Culture on Management

I’m doing a subject called Cross Cultural Management or International Management Behaviour.

I was wondering if anyone has good web links on this topics or any place where I can get good info on it. Also if any online books on teh topic are available for free download I’d appreciate it.

If anyone has any personal experiences to share on how culture can cause conflict in an international business context, or management challeneges due to cross culture shock.

And yes if anyone has done any essays or reports and is willing to share I’d greatly appreciate it.

I have done a presentation on this topic. If you want I can post my powerpoint slides. You can PM me.

(I am an MBA student in Western Kentucky)

First,

two examples I can think of as a practitioner:

1.
In one of my projects with a business unit in Japan, I learned that people there tend to be more mellow and silent - which contradicts the management style in North America where project managers tend to be more agressive and forthcoming.

If I wasn't told this in advance by someone who had worked with that team, I would personally take their silence as either incompetency or even sheer rudeness.

2.
Working on a project with Capital financing, I found out that in multinational deals with the Arab world, financial charges may be labelled as "administration fees" where the norm prohibits interests on loans etc.

From an academic perspective, A good framework to follow in cross-cultural management is Salacuse's 10 factors model.

Read:

Salacuse, "Making Global Deal – Negotiating in the International Market Place"

and

Salacuse “Implications for Practitioners,” in "Culture and
Negotiation"

Also see if you can get your hands on this book: "The Silent Language"... its old but very valuable advice!
